Reopens for business

ollowing the devastation from the huge blaze in 2010, No5 Higher Street (formerly the Khrua Thai Restaurant) has been painstakingly restored to its former glory befitting its part Grade I listed status. With the work just about complete, it will open just before this month’s Regatta with a new ‘pop-up’ shop on the ground floor and two high quality holiday apartments on the floors above.

After 3 years, the various building site hoardings around Higher Street have been removed and residents and visitors are now able to remind themselves of the special beauty of this historic part of town. No 5 stands proudly centre stage. The building is owned by the Way family (owners of the Royal Castle Hotel) with the work on the new shop and holiday lets overseen by Nigel and Anne Way. Nicolle Kniebe has been

doing a lot of the product sourcing and planning for the new pop-up shop and will initially manage it as part of her industry placement during 2013/14 – she’s doing a Retail Management course at Bournemouth University. The new pop-up shop – aptly named ‘Number FiVe’ – will focus on quality but affordable homewares and home accessories. These will include wallpapers and fabrics from Clarke & Clarke, an internationally recognized leader in home fashion with styles ranging from the classic to the contemporary. As a shop within a shop, the well-known Fanfare Interiors of Newton Abbot will be running a concession so that Dartmouth residents and visitors can browse their wide range of quality soft furnishings and home accessories. Number FiVe are confident that their product range will add value to Dartmouth’s growing reputation as a retail destination for home interiors. Number FiVe will actually be the only place in town

that buyers can sit and browse a wide range of wallpaper catalogues. To make that experience more pleasurable, you’ll be able to pass the time away with a high quality and freshly made coffee - and you can even buy the coffee beans it’s made with to take away with you! Not only will visitors enjoy the retail experience but will also marvel again at this iconic Dartmouth building. Its façade and 17th century ceiling (the latter unfortunately only enjoyed by those letting the 1st floor apartment!) have been carefully restored using the very best techniques and craftsmanship available. Combe Martin-based Sean Wheatley and his team have carried out the plasterwork on the moulded ceiling with the end result probably better than it has been for many years. The main restoration work has been handled by J E Staceys of Holsworthy

who previously did much of the work on Kittery Court in Kingswear. Under the watchful eye of specialist architect, Jonathan Rhind, and supervised locally by BBH Architects, the restoration has been a lengthy and expensive project. Bob Lyon has been the Project Manager.

The end result includes two very attractive holiday apartments in a great location in the town. For details about renting the apartments, readers should initially contact 01803 834827.
