Around Kingswear NEWS FROM THE SUNNY SIDE

REGATTA ‘13 And what a regatta! On behalf of the village I will presume

to thank the Regatta Committee for all their hard work throughout the year to present a marvellous village event. The sun shone, the rain stayed up instead of down and the breeze was a faint refreshing zephyr (not Ford). What more could you want? Well, lots of stalls for instance, splat the canoeist, buy the

book, scoff the cake, slurp the tea, drain the beer, nosh the burger, laugh at the dog, pick the ticket, get your face painted, giggle with Professor Fumble, colour the picture, hold your breath in the loo, wonder at the splendid cars and bus (thank you Jonathan!)....... Apparently some people even rowed! The rowing went absolutely according to plan with no dodgy bits at all; all was sportsmanship and perfect timing. (I am keeping my face perfectly straight as I write this,

honest.) The ducks behaved themselves in the creek in their normal

manner, ie not at all and a thumping good time was had by everyone. as yet the finances are not finalised because the treasurer has escaped on holiday, presumably not on the proceeds! a financial statement will be forthcoming from a box number in the cayman islands. Suffice it to say that the money was looking good because there was a very creditable turn-out and all individual contributors said that they had done well. You’ll have to contain your excitement until the next issue of By the Dart, which will reveal all. It must be said that these events do not just happen. They

only come about because of the dedication and vision and downright good-heartedness of a small number of people who work really hard for us all, every time. To those people once again THANK YOU VERY MUCH INDEED. ‘Your blood’s worth bottlin’, as they say in Yorkshire.

BRING OUT YER BEASTS Lynne Maurer has asked me to let you know that she is

willing to take in poorly waifs and strays of the feathered or furred variety (NOT batchelors of the parish!) to nurse them back to health. At Nethway there are plenty of pens and cages for such nurturing activity, so if you find a creature in need of care and attention please contact Lynne on 752491. There is knowledgeable care on hand and of course a safe environment for the exhausted and blistered of Kingswear and area.

FROST AGAIN, IN AUGUST! Now, I remember a time when you went to church and,

by Mike Trevorrow

whatever there was or was not there for you, you were fairly certain of a roof, you sort of took it for granted. Well not any more. Our church has developed a hole where a hole has no right to be. On the plus side it will cool the place down on hot July days, but on the minus side it would let in the rain and make the winters very cold indeed. Churches are not easy to heat and need all the help they can get by not having holes. So some kind people, Ian and Joanne McClelland, have made their lovely house and garden avail- able to us all on Sunday September 8th at 12:30 to 2:30 pm. when funds will be created from the event to help towards the roof repair. Thanks are also due to the splendid Mike Goodearl whose lovely posters once again grace our boards advertising the event. As the more enterprising of you will have noticed from the poster, the event will cost £10 each, including a drink and some canapés. Tickets are available from the shop and of course all monies collected will go directly to the roof repair fund. For those who need to be got out of their Sunday chairs with a shoe-horn there is the added inducement of a licensed bar and a raffle which will doubtless offer fabulous prizes for a mere pittance. how could you possibly miss it?! The event is to be attended in posh frocks and panamas.

While I have a panama hat, and only look moderately stupid while wearing it, I rather think I would frighten too many horses if I wore a dress, so perhaps the chaps would like to consider the horses and wear something respectably male. Mind you, if you’ve got the legs for it.............

A TRULY GOLDEN EVENING Over 100 Kingsweardos and associates enjoyed an

absolutely fabulous evening last July 3rd when Jonathan Hawkins and the parish council organised a trip on the river in our own, our very own, Kingswear Castle, the only surviving coal-powered, paddle-driven steam boat on British waters. She’s a beauty, sporting a wonderful ancient steam engine saved from the old Kingswear Castle which lies rotting on the banks of the Dart up above Sharpham on the east bank. The River Dart was looking her absolute best that night,
