Kelly Frazer knew she wanted a change from her job in


advertising. She knew she wanted to do something in her West Broadway community, and she knew she wanted to do something helping people access healthy food. So she started working at Soup Bee—now a thriving local business with a twist. “I think it’s important for


everyone to have access to good food that can keep you healthy and make you live your life as fully as possible” she says. Soup Bee offers a selection of delicious and affordable soups, delivered weekly via bike courier. Developed and operated by West Broadway Community Organization following a community consultation, Soup Bee is a social enterprise, helping community members develop work experience. Since Soup Bee’s launch, business has steadily grown. Chef Alex Wright’s mouth-watering soups play a big part in that, Kelly says. The social responsibility aspect also helps. “People in general want to put their buying power towards something they know is doing some good in their community.” Kelly also volunteers with Fruit

Share, which pairs homeowners with surplus fruit, together with volunteer pickers. The harvest is split between the homeowner, the pickers and a non-profit. Kelly took her five-year-old son on a recent rhubarb pick. “I think it’s important for kids to


know where the food comes from, where it is grown, that you don’t just buy it in the grocery store.” As a busy mom of two with a


third on the way, Kelly does her best to balance healthy eating with convenience. “It can be very appealing to get


something fast and processed - in my family we try to avoid that situation as much as possible.”
