Concern over parking as flats agreed

PLANNING permission has been granted to convert a 1960s former office block in London Road, Maidstone into 73 resi- dential flats. Croft Capital will transform six-floor Concorde House, which fronts the A20 London Road at its junction with the Rocky Hill one-way system, into 68 one- and two-bed flats and five studio flats. The scheme will involve the introduction of an extra floor to create roof ter- race apartments. A total of 72 parking spaces

An artist’s impression of Concorde House, after the conversion

will be provided behind the building, but this was criticised by Cllr Fran Wilson who spoke

at the end of the determining planning committee meeting. She was one of the members who voted in favour, to give the application unanimous backing. She said: “There was no rea-

son to refuse it, but I am dis- turbed to see we have another development in the middle of town with no parking around it. “There is nowhere for a dis-

trict nurse, doctor, mother, fa- ther, brother or sister to park when they visit. There are no residential roads or other park- ing spaces nearby and it is crass that it was not considered. I am sorry I did not pick up on it dur- ing the hearing.

Mayor opens improved almshouses

RESIDENTS living in some of Maidstone’s charity almshouses were thrilled to get new kitchens and bathrooms – fol- lowed by a visit from themayor. The Cutbush and Corrall almshouses in St Faith’s Street were declared open by mayor Cllr Clive English, following a nine month refurbishment cost- ing £500,000, some of which was a grant from theHomes and Community Agency. Spokesman Caroline Gambell

said: “New kitchen extensions were added and the tiny bath-

in the scheme. The Cutbush & Corrall Charity

rooms extended into wet rooms. As well as all the almshouse residents, guests for the cere- mony included the scheme managers and trustees, as well as the architect, quantity sur- veyor and contractors involved

was set up in 1865 by Thomas Robert Cutbush. He built the seven houses in Church Street in what was his back garden – and bought investment property in London to ensure there was an income to maintain them. For more information go to www.cutbushandcorrall.co.uk. Cllr English is pictured re- opening the improved almshouses by cutting a ribbon held by residents Queenie Watts, left and Jackie Town

“I really do not want to see something like this coming for- ward again. People will not stay living there, they will move out and we will have dreadful prob- lems.We do it to ourselves.” The layoutwill remain largely

the same but will be given a “contemporary makeover”, ac- cording to a supporting state- ment. “The new design is considered

to successfully integrate into the evolving character of Rocky Hill, where buildings provide a mixed aesthetic. A contempo- rary approach has been em- ployed and welcomed by MBC on the nearby Premier Inn.”

Friends remembered THE Annual Service of Re- membrance took place at Vin- ters Park Crematorium, Bearsted Road, on June 9. The Reverend Geoff Davis,

Vicar of St Peter’s Church, Boughton Monchelsea, con- ducted the service, and music was provided by the Salvation Army Band. Residents whose relatives

and friends had been cremated at Vinters Park were invited to the service, where they enjoyed the memorial gardens and viewed the books of remem- brance.
