Housing group in joint drug operation

GOLDING Homes has been working with officers from the Kent Police Community Safety Unit to tackle reports of anti-so- cial behaviour at two town cen- tre housing developments. The campaign led to – and followed on from – a number of drugs operations, which saw some residents being charged with drug-related offences. Officers from both organisa-

tions carried out surveys at Sunningdale Court, in Square Hill Road, to discuss commu- nity safety. This followed a similar exer-

cise at Midhurst Court, in Mote Road, where they carried out a series of checks with residents. Inspector Jody Gagan-Cook, of

the community safety unit, said: “We have carried out a number of drugs operations at these locations, seized drugs and dealt with offenders appro- priately. “This is all part of our ongo-

ingwork to catch criminalswho are working in the area and im- prove quality of life for the other people in the area. “Information we receive from

the public is really important and allows us to take action like this, so I would encourage peo- ple to report suspicious activity to either Kent Police, or anony- mously to Kent Crimestoppers.” The joint operation has con- tributed to improved customer satisfaction, according to Gold- ing Homes, who say more than 80% of their residents now feel satisfied with where they live. Results showed thatmore than

78% of the residents now feel confident in reporting issues to GoldingHomes andKent Police. The duo plan to continue working in partnership, target- ing priority areas throughout the year. Stephen Timms, Golding Homes community safety advi- sor said: “We want our homes to be safe and enjoyable places to live. We hope this joint op- eration will prevent further problems and possible evic- tions. “We thank the police and res- idents for their help and sup- port in tackling anti-social behaviour with us and look for- ward to future operations.”

Panthers pounce on station rubbish PANTHER Cubs from Barming gave their local railway station a clean sweep as part of Scout CommunityWeek. Staff at East Farleigh

station had received a numberof complaints from residents about the amount of rubbish around the site. The Cubs turned up with

litter picking sticks, hi-vis vests and thick gloves and helped duty station man- ager Matt Fraser, clear the north border of the car park. Matt returned another day to tackle the rest. The panthers amassed 15 bags of rubbish, which was collected by

Maidstone Council. Matt said: “It is certainly looking a lot better than itwas. I’m nowtry-

ing to get our facilities department to remove the build-up of mud and grit, andwewillmakesure that the car park is pickedonaregular basis.” Barming Cub Scouts have been working towards achieving an envi- ronmental award as part of their awards programme. Assistant Cub Scout leader Sue Beeney spotted an item in the parish

newsabout the sorry state of East Farleigh RailwayStation car park and decided that this seemed like a suitable challenge.

Health initiative on award shortlist

ANINITIATIVE by BMI Somer- field Hospital, in Maidstone, which assesses patients at risk from deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, has been shortlisted for a 2013 Independ- ent Healthcare Award. The awards recognise quality

and innovation in the inde- pendent healthcare sector. VTE, or venous thromboem- bolism, is responsible for 25,000 largely preventable deaths each year in UK hospi- tal. Clots, usually formed in the veins of a patient’s leg, can break loose and travel through

the heart and into the pul- monary arteries, where they cause a blockage. Connie Stocker, executive di-

rector at BMI Somerfield Hospi- tal, said: “We are delighted that the initiative has been recog- nised. It is a testament to all staff in the hospital who worked hard to implement the thrombosis service with our pa- tients’ safety at the core.” The winner of the risk man-

agement category will be an- nounced at the Independent Healthcare Awards Gala Dinner on October 8.
