2013 TECH BRIEF
most recent National winner, Race 2 2012 Canadian Tire Motorsport Park victor Welsh, Saleemi has some specific priorities. “The goal is always not to overwhelm the
rider with too much power, however much power that might be at any given time at any given track,” he explains. “For Alex, that means a motor with lots of top end, and with good, smooth throttle response. “Right now, we plan to go into the Super-
bike series with two basic engine packages for our GSX-R1000s,” explains the man they call ‘Zed.’ “They have similar outright power. One is much like what Brett McCormick used for Picotte’s team in 2009, and the other comes from our team – it’s squeezed to hell! “One of the configurations, you can drive
that bike from as low as 4,000 rpm, it’s a real truck. We’re aiming at finding a setup that gives Alex what he needs at every track in the series, and the variety is quite wide. Tuning for fast places like (CTMP) and Mont-Tremblant is not as complicated as more technical tracks like St-Eustache and especially Shubenacadie (Atlantic Motor- sport Park), and Shannonville has very par- ticular requirements that we’re focused on at the moment.” When it comes to working with a rider, every pilot is different, says Saleemi.
“Jodi isn’t inclined to ride around a problem,” says Sharrard of the working relationship with his 20- year-old rider (left). “He wants to find solutions, work toward a bike that really handles.”
“With Alex, it is more about how to get a
handle on the bike overall, get comfortable to his way of thinking,” he says. “The bike may look sideways, out of shape, but he is frequently comfortable even then as long as it doesn’t overwhelm his senses. From his
time on GP bikes, he always wants to get to 100 percent throttle, as fast as he can.” Of course, everyone is considering what
it will take to beat reigning overall number one Jordan Szoke, and his latest pair of Parts Canada-backed Waznie Racing BMW
Collecting and analyzing computer data, as well as rider feedback, is crucial to optimizing on-track performance. While tuners don’t often get the recogni- tion they deserve, they are an integral part of any racer’s on-track success.
