JULY 2013

at Pony Up for Pediatrics Horse Show & Family Festival June 9 • McDonogh School, Ownings Mills • by Regina Welsh

Pediatric Liver Specialist Dr. Kathy Schwarz is one in a million.

Dr. Schwarz with her patients Bella and Sam, both who were born with the life-threatening liver disease biliary atresia. Bella received part of her father’s liver and Sam a portion of his aunt’s liver.

Perhaps, that’s why she’s a doctor. T e Johns Hopkins Children’s Center doc had a dream and made it come true. Dr. Schwarz came into riding later in life, but has seen how riding is not only good therapeutically for individuals, but how collectively the power of the equestrian community can raise funds for many causes. She asked herself one day, “Why not Hopkins?” With the help of McDonogh School Director of Riding Streett Moore, local horsewoman Regina Welsh led the charge as the show and festival Event Director. Dr. Schwarz’s dream came true when horse and non-horse folks alike mingled at the fi rst gathering of the Pony Up for Pediatrics at McDonogh School on June 9 in Owings Mills. Proceeds from the day benefi ted the Child Live Department and the Pediatric Liver Center to aid in research and help kids live healthy lives. T e day raised over $250,000 in funds.

The Child Life Department hosted a tent full of free activities including a rain gutter regatta, face painting, stick pony assembly and other arts and crafts keeping kids busy all day.

Johns Hopkins Children’s Center staff and physicians faced off in teams of three racing bouncy ponies in the Hopkins Hippity Hop Challenge. Aside from the horse show in the adjacent arena, this challenged proved to be the highlight exhibition of the day with 21 physicians and staff members participating.

Miss Baltimore and Miss Western Maryland were on hand, assisting where- ever they could.

Grace First riding Ami Howard’s Olney St. Nicholas was the youngest entry of the day. The leadline division was won by Dennison Wheaton riding Stacey Schaefer’s Bella.

Heidi Herzog lured in kids to feel fi rst hand what it’s like to be on the back of a pony.

Thanks to Medieval Times, the crowd was treated to a sword battle between knights!
