It seems that Microsoft have been listening to the gripes about the lack of a Start Button in the recent Windows 8. They are going to reinstate it towards the end of the year with the release of the 1st Service pack. Unfortunately, that does not mean it will be at all useful as what that means in reality is that they are simply making the funny looking button (bottom left) that takes you to the “metro” screen a permanent feature. So not real progress!
If you have a Network Attached Storage device and are in the habit of accessing it remotely you will no doubt be pleased with what you can do. That is until you try to open an MS Office 2003 - 2013 document and then suddenly nothing works. If this affects you, then this is a problem of Microsoft’s making and there is no easy fix. It is a deliberate issue to stop you being able to open the documents unless via a proper server or MS Sharepoint. I am afraid there is little to be done unless it is a Western Digital drive, in which case we can fix it, but we can explain why and what to do to get around it.
We have discovered recently that if you have a BT internet email address and you use ONLY a program on your PC to access that mail (Windows Live Mail, Mac Mail, Outlook, Entourage or Outlook Express) then you stand to have your mail disrupted or even deleted every 150 days unless you log in and send an email from the webmail interface. If you have a BT email account that you do not access at all, then it WILL be deleted after 150 days of inactivity. Why is BT now doing this? We can only think it is so that they can subject you to their advertising etc in the webmail area, but they call it an “austerity measure.” It could also be the fact that they are beginning to dis-associate themselves from Yahoo and this helps them do that?
How often should I shut down my Computer? This question gets asked of us a lot, and unfortunately there’s no easy answer. All sorts of factors must be considered, such as how much power your computer draws vs. how much your electric company charges per kilowatt hour; how important it is to you that you have immediate access to your computer at all times; and so on. Essentially, it boils down to your own personal preference, but we would say that environmentally it makes sense to shut down when you have finished for the day. If you decide to keep it on all the time, then do make sure you restart it at least once every few days as there are updates that it will need to install and they generally take effect only after a restart.
