The fact that this recording exists at all is largely due to the intervention of the then barely known Paul Simon, who takes the production credit. Simon & Garfunkel recorded their own version of the title song later that year in the sessions for their ‘Sounds of Silence’ LP, but it was never released until being included in the duo’s 1997 box set: ‘Old Friends’. The song may not have a typical blues music construction, but the lyric absolutely nails the genre:
“When I’m not drinking, baby You are on my mind... When I’m not sleeping, honey....
Well you know you’ll find me crying.”
Frank’s personal life was a relentless trail of misfortune: he suffered 50% burns in a school fire at the age of 11, his only son died of cystic fibrosis, in middle age he was blinded in one eye from a pellet gun. Further medical problems (physical and mental) affected his finances and his creativity. He died in poverty in 1999 at the age of 56; this was the life of a bluesman:
“Living is a gamble, baby, Loving’s much the same, Wherever I have played,
Wherever I throw them dice, Wherever I have played, The blues have run the game.”
