MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON
Serving as a chief executive officer for a public safety agency in today’s environment brings many challenges. These range from keeping the organization prepared for response to service demands, continuously enhancing the capacity of the agency to address emerging issues, maintaining the community’s trust, ensuring staff are supported in the performance of their duties and responsibilities, and always keeping a future focus to promote ongoing organizational relevancy. Each of these challenges have many primary and secondary activities associated with them that ultimately create a myriad of issues to which chief executive officers must remain attuned. In short, given the dynamic nature of today’s public safety concerns and the host of emerging issues that must be considered, the chief executive must have an effective administrative and operational model for success.
C
ALEA has always been keenly aware of the importance of an ongoing process to support public safety chief executive officers in meeting these key objectives. In fact, the CALEA mission clearly states the organization serves to improve the delivery of public safety services through the administration of an accreditation process and also recognizing professional excellence. Over the past year CALEA has remained focused on this responsibility and within this document you will notice service enhancements accomplished through the effective use of partnerships, technology, programming adjustments, and logistical applications. Overall, the Commissioners and staff of CALEA have worked hard in 2012 to move the organization forward without compromising the integrity of the CALEA Accreditation model.
Additionally, I am extremely proud of the growth CALEA observed in 2012. This growth has occurred with an understanding that it must be managed and it has been accomplished in a strategic manner. To that end, CALEA has made adjustments in its distribution of client agencies
and established service regions that take into consideration the continuity of accreditation coalitions and states that have similar professional cultures. Again, this action has been strategically implemented and provides an effective framework for future growth.
As we move into 2013, I challenge the entire public safety community to consider the benefits of CALEA Accreditation and I ask members of participating agencies to serve as strong ambassadors for the program. CALEA’s strength comes from its clients and as we increase our representation we will certainly see new opportunities to positively meet the defined mission and ensure more agencies are prepared to address the challenges we will certainly all will face in the future. The concept of collective preparedness serves the entire public safety community well and contributes significantly to the safety of this nation’s citizens.
