Marvellous Murals Enhance Pool Rooms CASE STUDY

Alan Taylor, muralist and painter, has over the last 25 years painted many murals in swimming pool rooms. A Fellow of The Faculty of Decoration, he is assisted by his wife Caroline who is a specialist decorator. They are based in South Yorkshire and Surrey but work nationwide and occasionally abroad. The latest example of their work has just been completed for a luxury house builder in Surrey and it shows how a modern interior can gel with a traditional subject. This basement room could have been a dead-end soulless tunnel; even a bit claustrophobic. The mural gives it the ‘wow factor’ by opening up the space and helping to create a relaxing environment in which to swim or just chill-out with a glass of wine. The creative process started with a site visit to what was still a building site. Alan produced preliminary artwork in the form of a watercolour painting which was approved and a fixed price of £2,500 agreed. Careful consideration was given to

viewpoints, colours and design. Painted stone comfortably blends with real tiles and the pillars and arches appear to hold up the ceiling. The painted lake echoes the water of the pool; the soft greens of the landscape and the terracotta roofs lift the otherwise neutral scheme. The illusion is enhanced by a reflection in the pool. The mural was painted on-site directly onto the plaster wall in artists’ acrylic, protected with a clear varnish and was completed within two weeks. And the client’s reaction: “The mural looks fantastic, it really finishes the room off.”

Any subject can be painted in any style to suit the building’s integrity and the client’s personality. In normal air conditioned pool rooms a mural will last a lifetime. Prices start at around £1,000 inclusive.
