Standards And Promotion Help Strengthen The Industry

BSPF MANAGING DIRECTORCHRIS HAYES HIGHLIGHTS THE PROGRESS MADE IN STANDARDS AND THE PROMOTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES THAT EXIST FOR THE WIDER INDUSTRY

CEN Public Enquiry and I hope that you get a chance to view the documents to keep yourself abreast of the proposed work being undertaken on our behalf. SPATA is at the forefront of this work on behalf of the BSI. Ideally, any feedback will be provided (online) before the end of July. There is more information about this important topic on page 36. A recent meeting in Stockholm discussed the possibility of starting European standards for hot tubs and swim spas. This is a vital topic for colleagues not only in Europe, but also in North America. Further discussions will be taking place this year and at least some of the work will be undertaken online via WebEx to save on travel time, and for expenses such as travel, accommodation and refreshments. Talking of Europe, John Scott (in his role as EUSA President) welcomed a number of colleagues from EUSA to a meeting in Brighton recently and among the agenda items in a packed couple of days, was an update about the inaugural EUSA Awards 2013. More information about this EUSA meeting can be found on page 37.

ell, the first of the European Standards for domestic swimming pools are now out for consultation through the

chance to raise the profile of pools and spas across Europe and over time, there is no reason why representatives from the British Isles could not be competing not only against colleagues in Europe, but potentially from across the world. Many exhibitors from across the world choose to exhibit at SPATEX and the latest reports from Michele and Helen show that SPATEX 2014 is already 75% full. The feedback since the Open Day at the Ricoh Arena and the Jaguar Exhibition Hall has left many people in the industry very enthused about what the industry will be able to achieve in a new venue next year.

In the last issue, I mentioned that SPATA was attending Grand Designs Live and the event went very well for a number of members that exhibited, either on the SPATA stand, or some members had their own stand for the whole nine days of the show! There is more news on this story on page 37.

The industry received some timely support from a survey that showed hot tubs were growing in popularity. The survey came from the banking and insurance industry and found that homeowners were making their hot tub a key part of their garden. The story snowballed and a number of newspapers carried the positive message about hot tubs and this culminated in a feature on BBC’s The One Show. The industry needs to be ready with a number of case studies and examples of how our industry helps its customers, so please store them up for when we may need to use them to promote what we do! Looking ahead, Leisure Industry Week (LIW) is fast approaching (24 to 26 September) and SPATA is again working with UBM Live (the show organisers) to exhibit at the show and to support its members that are also exhibiting. LIW is the UK’s largest annual gathering of leisure professionals and the Pool & Spa section will include a brand new pool feature

called the STA Swim Zone showcasing a range of exciting events throughout the duration of the show. A number of Pool & Spa exhibitors will also be on hand, keen to meet some of the thousands of leisure professionals that attend the show every year.

A reminder to members (and an invitation to non members) that Martin and Delyse Borley would like you to join them at the President’s Weekend being held this autumn at the Stanwell House Hotel in Lymington on 11 to 13 October in the beautiful New Forest. There are options to attend part, or all of the weekend and further details, including costs are available from the office. We recently said “goodbye” to Lana Suhova as PR and Marketing Manager and wish her good luck in her new role. We will be looking to find a replacement to carry on the work of promoting our industry. Finally, I am delighted that in this issue, there is a member focus on atg UV Technology (SPATA) and on Malibu Hot Tubs (BISHTA). Have a great summer!
