School making efforts to improve, says Ofsted

ARCHBISHOP Courtenay Church of England Primary School is making “reasonable progress” towards getting out of special measures, according to a monitoring report from Ofsted. The school, in a brand new building in Eccleston Road, Tovil, became subject to special measures in November, when inspectors deemed its standards of education as inadequate and gave it the lowest possible score – a grade 4. In the first monitoring inspec-

tion since the damning report, inspectors said the school’s im- provement plan covered all the required areas, butwould bene- fit from more detail and more interim milestones. Her Majesty’s Inspector,

Robert Ellis, said: “The school’s monitoring of teaching shows that training, support and coaching are having a positive impact on improving teaching. Classrooms visited were gener- ally calm and orderly.Work has been done to make classrooms more interesting spaces that support pupils’ learning.” The school remains in special measures and has been told it may not appoint newly quali- fied teachers before the next monitoring inspection. Special measures means the school is failing to give its pupils an acceptable standard of education and those in charge of the school are not demonstrating the ability to make improvements.
