The Howard, Edinburgh Reviewed by Jen and Martin Chatfield from Kippen
On our arrival in Edinburgh the cold February evening was quickly contrasted by our warm welcome at The Howard. The hotel occupies three Georgian townhouses in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town, and from the moment we arrived we were met with a level of service reminiscent of days gone by and were made to feel at home – albeit in a luxurious, out-of-this-world setting. The hotel is conveniently situated in the centre of Edinburgh and has a
dedicated car park situated at the rear. From there, we were escorted by our butler to the comfortable lounge to relax whilst our luggage was being settled in the room – he even offered to unpack our cases. The butler then showed us to our room, which had been delightfully upgraded to the Trinity suite, and explained the list of butler services on offer at The Howard, which ranged from pressing clothes to picking up shopping, to drawing a bath and setting up an intimate dinner for two in the privacy of your own suite. The butlers were discreet yet attentive and really enhanced our fabulous experience. The Atholl dining room is an intimate and elegant experience serving expertly prepared modern Scottish food. The room seats only 14 people, but if you prefer some privacy then you can ask a butler to arrange a romantic meal in your room.
The Howard is not only an intimately peaceful haven but it also shows a real commitment to the environment. The hotel is conscious of the impact it may have on the environment and encourages residents to help reduce this impact by actively making choices such as reducing energy consumption, recycling, giving the car a rest, being water-wise and supporting local produce. Each visitor is made to feel that they have an important role to play in helping The Howard become a more eco-friendly, sustainable destination which has a karmic effect of offsetting 5-star indulgence with saving the planet. This boutique hotel combines luxury and excellent food with old fashioned charm and a warming atmosphere making it a truly exceptional experience. I did not want to leave and I will certainly return. Prices from £108 per room per night

from Aboyne We had the pleasure of staying in ‘Clunie’ cottage in the beautiful Manse Courtyard overlooking Balmoral. On arrival Maggie MacAlpine ensured we had everything we required to make our disabled son’s stay comfortable. These wonderful cottages pride themselves on being able to accommodate people with a wide range of needs and disabilities and from the superbly thought out accommodation you can certainly see why. They also have a gold star for being eco-friendly. If you can tear yourself away from the comfort of the cottage you may spot some local wildlife or even one of the Royals! Prices from £315 per week
Dornoch Castle Hotel, Dornoch Reviewed by Gary and Jenni Brewer from
Glenfarg
Our arrival at Dornoch Castle Hotel was accompanied by a very warm Highland welcome. Green credentials include a biomass heating and hot water system and the use of locally sourced produce (notably the seared beef and venison, which featured on a rich dinner menu). We enjoyed the delights of the well-appointed Tower Room, complete with wood-burning stove and four-poster bed. A memorable and enjoyable first stay in a very unique hotel, rounded off with a glass of Hendrick’s in front of a very welcoming log fire. Prices from £96 per room per night B&B
