Just A Note! Summer is finally here! From the soft, salty ocean breezes to the thud

of suitcases as family and friends come to visit our Florida sunshine, everything about summer (except hurricanes) makes me smile.

Recently, I was fortunate to attend and participate in two wonderful

events that focused on women and girls on the First Coast. Family! was proud to be one of the sponsors of Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) North Florida. EYH is an annual event that promotes STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers to middle school girls. Te young women attending this day-long program were smart, enthusiastic and curious. (Yes, I did meet some very proud parents.) Te group of women and men leading this event were awe-inspiring in their energy and dedication to promoting these subjects to our local girls (page 43).

Generation W was a wonderful one-day event that brought together

more than 900 women in our area to connect, inspire and support one another’s efforts and dreams in the workplace (page 49).

We have filled the pages of this issue with family fun that includes

birthday celebrations, playful fashions and, as always, information, resources and inspiration for you and your family to enjoy.

Do you want to keep the children off the couch and active this

summer? Check out our Where the Wild Tings Play section for outdoor fun and adventure that will get the entire family on the move.

Te military is a big part of our lives here on the First Coast. Family!

celebrates and salutes some military moms who juggle it all, dancing backwards and in combat boots (page 52).

Not to be left out, our Hero Dads will impress you with their love

for and dedication to their country, community and families (page 54). On a sadder note, as I write this our nation has been shocked by the

tragic bombings at the Boston Marathon. Lives have been lost and families changed forever. Parents all over the country are dealing with their children’s fears and questions. To assist you with this difficult issue, we have asked Dr. Karla Repper for her advice on how to discuss such tragic occurrences with our children (page 23).

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Boston and their friends and families as they move forward.

Sincerely,

Rose Johnson Associate Publisher/Editor in Chief
