How do I deal with my 4-year-old having extreme separation anxiety when I leave her?

Separation anxiety disorder is defined as developmentally inappropriate and excessive anxiety concerning separation

from home or from those to whom the child is attached. To be diagnosed with this disorder, symptoms must be present for a minimum of four consecutive weeks and in youth older than 6 years. Terefore, separation anxiety is normal for youth under age 6. Te best recommended way to assist a 4-year-old in overcoming separation anxiety is to use cognitive- behavioral therapy. Tis includes relaxation training that can help during the time of separation and continuing the unchanged separation routine.

I took my toddler to the beach and it looks like she has a rash right around her bathing suit bottom line. What can this be from and what should I do?

Tere are two possible answers for what caused this rash. Te first is the rash is a reaction to the bathing suit material.

Te elastic or other materials in the bathing suit that may not normally touch the child’s skin could cause a contact dermatitis in these areas. Te second cause could be that sand got stuck in the small areas of the bathing suit fabric and caused irritation to the child’s skin. For future beach trips, start by changing the bathing suit to one made of a different material. Tis rash can also be treated with over the counter hydrocortisone 1 percent cream. If the rash does not go away, a visit with the toddler’s primary care provider is necessary.

I’m concerned my 8-year-old son may have ADD or ADHD. His teacher has told me he has trouble paying attention in class, but at home he seems able to concentrate. Will he grow out of this or should I seek medication?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition of the brain that makes it difficult for children to

control their behavior. Te three behavior symptoms associated with ADHD include inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Te only difference between attention-deficit disorder (ADD) and ADHD is that ADHD involves hyperactivity, but both are diagnosed and treated in the same manner. Teachers are most often the first to notice ADHD symptoms in children, which can explain why a child’s teacher is informing a parent who has not yet noticed the change in behavior. It is important to see a pediatrician and talk with them about a possible ADHD diagnosis.
