Having a colonoscopy is a wise and prudent thing to do! Doo wop song, Up the Poop Chute, débuts at CancerCare Manitoba event
Now here’s a private type of tale with you that I’m gonna share;
It’s about a thing that happened to me way down there;
It all began when Doc said, “Drop your underwear!”
Well, I gotta say the whole thing gave me quite a scare…
A
rranged in five-part harmony and performed hillbilly style to the tune borrowed from Alley Oop (1960), so begins Up the Poop Chute, a light-hearted cautionary tale of a simple man who undergoes his first colonoscopy. The song, written for the “Bottoms Up! Evening” for colorectal cancer research, had its début performance Tuesday, April 23rd at Fort Garry Place for the enjoyment of all in attendance at this fundraiser for the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. The parody, written by Larry Rup- pel of the local rock, pop and doo wop band REWiND (most of whose mem- bers, ages 41 to 65, have had a colo-
noscopy) reflects the common fears and reticence that most of us experi- ence prior to undergoing what can be a life-saving procedure. As the long title of the song asserts, having a colo- noscopy is a wise and prudent thing to do. In 2012, it was estimated that of the 23,300 Canadians diagnosed with colorectal cancer, 9,200 or 39.5% will die. Early detection by way of a colonoscopy is the first line of defense against the second leading cause of death in this country. Notwithstanding the important mes- sage of the song, its humour cannot be denied as is illustrated in the first chorus:
“Doc, be careful or I’ll cause a scene. Please don’t make me watch this on the screen. Who came up with this? It seems so mean. Where does that long probe go? [Answer:] Up the poop chute, poop, poop chute!” The song ends with the fellow, “thankful from my bottom to my heart”, and admitting: “…everything came out well in the end. Lots can that
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death. Early detection is the answer.
