A look at modern day tooth implants and why they're becoming commonplace

The denture will be fully anchored when the post on each root implant is fitted onto a tooth in the denture.

eople now are much more edu- cated when it comes to dental implants. With help from social media, the Internet and word of mouth, our clients are more informed about dental implants than ever before. Every mouth and design is unique to that individual. When a treatment plan is designed, many factors come into play. For example, bone structure, placement of implants, how many teeth are being replaced, what does the client want the end result to look and feel like; these are questions that we need to answer prior to placing a single implant.

At our clinic, we have been working with dental implants since 1987. Every week we see new clients. It is normal for a new client to be nervous of the unknown. Does it hurt? How long will treatment take? How many implants will I need? What are costs associated with dental implants?

The surgical procedure can only be done by an oral surgeon or a dentist. who will take an x-ray to determine the size and quality of the bone. Once the procedure is determined, we will spend time with the client to go over costs, de- signs and time. We believe that answer- ing all the questions prior to starting is the best way of becoming a team.. Will implants improve their way of

life? Yes. Dental implants are the only way to truly replicate a natural tooth. When we lose our teeth – whether it be a single tooth, multiple teeth or all our teeth – it greatly decreases the function- ality of our chewing. The bones which

once supported the natural teeth will shrink. Chewing power is lost. And the loss of facial and muscle support be- comes evident. With dental implants, our chewing ability is maintained, which means we continue to have a balanced diet. This is crucial as we progress in age if we are to stay healthy.

With implants we won't limit our- selves to softer food; we are not as self- conscious in social settings. Dental im- plants improve the overall quality of life, and increase a client’s confidence! Dental implants are very popular. We

now have techniques available that al- low a client to come into the office in the morning, have their natural teeth extracted and implants placed, and leave wearing their new teeth – all in the same day. The fact that the clients only needs to have one main procedure is very ap- pealing.

When it comes to the pain one will experience, it's the equivalent of an ex- traction Following the procedure, the pain can again be compared to that of an extraction. The client will feel tis- sue discomfort for a few days or up to a week. As the actual implants are healing and integrating, the client will not feel discomfort. To experience a few days of discomfort for a lifetime of dental com- fort and confidence is more than accept- able to most people.

Keep in mind though that not every- one is a good candidate for dental im- plants. It is important to discuss your options with your denturist or dental professional. Seek several opinions. —Minuk Denture Clinic
