no reason to maintain bone when a tooth is not present so it goes through a process called "resorption" and wears away the bone over time. At some point, bone needs to be added so that a suitable size implant can be put in place and used ef- fectively. Hopefully the patient is healthy enough to be able to have a bone graft- ing procedure. It’s not complicated, but as people age they end up with lots of other health-related issues that can sometimes make this more challenging.
3. Are there any other cases where implants are not recommended? If a person has active periodontal dis- ease and it is not under control then the success of a dental implant can diminish and compromise the long term prognosis. For those who lack bone, it’s not wise to place implants in unfavorable positions. This makes restoring them a challenge and compromises long term survival. Also, if someone is immune-compromised, an uncontrolled diabetic, a heavy smoker or has terrible hygiene, the success rate can be less than for healthier individuals. 4. How many implants can a person
have?
This depends on what kind of restora- tion or prosthesis the individual desires as well as the bone quantity and quality. I've seen individuals that have a single implant to replace a missing tooth and others that have over a dozen implants to replace all their teeth. It’s all in the planning and ex- perience of the providers.

5. What is the average cost of an im- This really varies throughout the city
and country. On average the cost of re- placing a single tooth with an implant and crowning it can start at $3,000. It’s differ- ent when we talk about denture stabiliza- tion; we are not crowning a tooth then, but there is a denture and attachments that have to be factored in.
The price variability is usually related to the experience and expertise of the provid- er. If more than one person is involved the costs typically are a bit higher, but there are cases that do require some special sur- gical procedures which make it necessary for a skilled surgeon to be involved. 6. How can people pay for them? Cash, cheque, debit, major credit cards.
Some offices have financial plans available to allow patients to pay for the treatments in monthly installments
7. How do implants impact on per- sonal health?
The bottom line is when you have a
healthy set of teeth you are bound to be healthier. Nourishment is key to a healthy body and mind. When you are missing teeth the chewing efficiency drops and it can become hard to maintain a healthy diet.
Also, when we are missing teeth and age, our faces can collapse and that can be unsightly. If you don't replace the bone and place an implant, the only way to re- place the lost bone is to make a denture thicker. So implants also have an impact on the mindset of an individual who wish- es to slow down the aging process. Dr. Paresh Shah is the owner of Westwood Dental Center, at 6 – 3421 Portage Avenue.
