HISTORY LOVERS’ GETAWAY (continued) SATURDAY MORNING

Start your historical tour at Graue Mill and Museum (Oak Brook). Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it’s the only operating waterwheel gristmill in Illinois. Catch a spinning, weaving or milling demonstration and view artifacts displayed in period room settings and an Underground Railroad exhibit.

Nearby Mayslake Peabody Estate was once owned by coal baron F.S. Peabody. Tour the Tudor Revival style mansion, a nationally registered historic building by renowned architect B. Marshall, and the chapel that’s a replica of Portiuncula Chapel in Assisi, Italy.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON

Take your pick of a variety of lunch spots in Elmhurst’s City Centre before spending the day exploring their rich museum offerings.

If you’re a classic movie buff, be sure to call ahead to arrange a visit to the Theatre Historical Society of America above the renovated Spanish-style York Theatre, built in 1924, for a close-up view of their collection of historical photos, blueprints and artifacts.

Just down the street, you’ll find the award-winning Elmhurst Historical Museum, featuring national touring exhibits and interpretive exhibits on the history of this vibrant Midwestern town.

If there’s time, you may want to take a walk or drive the few short blocks to Wilder Park, which features the Elmhurst Art Museum, Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, the historic Wilder Mansion, Wilder Park Conservatory and Gardens, and the Elmhurst Public Library.

Aviation fans will want to make time for a trip down to the Illinois Aviation Museum at Bolingbrook, which offers a number of activities and programs open to the public.

SATURDAY EVENING

Take a nostalgic trip back in time for a casual dinner at Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket (Willowbrook), a 1940s roadhouse on historic Route 66. Don’t even think about passing up their incredible fried chicken and baked macaroni and cheese. You’ll walk it off tomorrow.

SUNDAY MORNING

Spend a leisurely morning at the hotel in preparation for a unique and delicious Sunday Brunch overlooking the breath-taking rose gardens at Mesón Sabika (Naperville), located in an 1847 Georgian-style mansion and featuring tapas, authentic dishes of Spain, along with standard brunch favorites.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON

If you’re here between April and October, you won’t want to miss the Naper Settlement – Outdoor History Museum (Naperville). In addition to ongoing activities in this 12-acre museum village, they offer lots of special weekend events, so be sure to check them out on our Calendar of Events before you come.
