Maine Maritime Museum seeking De- scendants of Wyoming Builders

BATH – When Maine Maritime Museum commemorates and celebrates the com- pletion of the full-size evocation of WYO- MING, the largest wooden ship ever built in the U.S., with a dedication on Saturday, June 1, the Museum plans to honor the men who accomplished that incredible feat by recognizing and honoring their descendants during the ceremony.

While descendants of all of WYO- MING builders are sought, of particular interest are the descendants of those men who were highly instrumental in the ves- sel’s construction - the shipyard owners, the ship’s designer and the master workmen in the yard. They were: Shipyard owner’s Captain Samuel R. Percy and Frank A. Small; Ship’s Designer Bant Hanson; Mas- ter Builder Miles M. Merry; Joiner Fred B. Scott; Blacksmith Leonard H. Gibson; Fas- tener Fred Colby; Rigger Frank A. Palmer; Caulkers Albert Tibbetts and Charles H. Oliver; Painter James R. Jewett; and Spar- maker James R. Cameron.

Descendants of those men and other WYOMING builders who can attend the dedication ceremony of the raising of WYOMING’s masts on Saturday, June 1, are asked to contact Joy Wiley at Maine Maritime Museum at (207) 443-1316 or by email at wiley@maritimeme.org. Those descendants in attendance will be identifi ed throughout the day’s festivities and at the dedication ceremony which begins at 11:30 a.m.

Construction of the schooner WYO- MING began in April 1909, and she was launched on December 15 of that year. WYOMING evocation, the largest public work of art in New England, is among the most visited and photographed sites in Maine. The design was conceived by acclaimed Maine sculptors Andreas von Heune and Joe Hemes. Comprised of two structures, replicas of the original ship’s bow and stern, plus the six replicas of the ship’s masts, the work of art spans almost 450 feet of the Museum’s riverfront campus. The

bow structure stands almost six stories high and its bow sprit reaches out some 100 feet, hovering over historic Washington Street in Bath. The stern section, almost four stories tall, sits near the river bank, seemingly waiting to enter the river at high tide as its namesake did more than 100 years before.
