The lobster boat DORIS MARGARET, Beals Island, got a complete cosmetic job this winter. Earlier this winter a 14 foot Holland was

in the seats.

Over in Chip’s garage is a 1947 wooden 18 foot dory with an 8 horsepower Palmer engine. Chip has been putting in new wiring, steering and an exhaust system. When this boat was purchased it was in pretty sad shape and her owner has completely rebuilt her. She will be done within a month.

She is sched- uled to be launched this summer. There are 74 boats in storage at the yard and all of them will need their usual annual maintenance before being launched this season. A number of these of already been serviced, but they will still be busy right up till the Fourth of July getting the rest ready.

Like many of the yards on the coast of Maine this year there is no real big projects, but more than enough small ones to keep everyone busy. Some of the more involved projects have included putting a deck on a 28 foot sailboat. They also did a major rebuild on a 28 foot wooden lobster boat which will be done in May. Ian Joseph in Orland is in the process of building a 17 foot Jericho Bay lobster skiff, designed by Joel White. They started the project back in January and she should be done sometime this summer. She is built using Alaskan yellow cedar strip plank bead and cove. Once the strip planking is done she will be covered with fi berglass. Then they will roll her over and add bulkheads and seats. The center console unit has been mocked up and will soon be constructed. As for the power it will be an outboard. This boat was built on spec and is for sale. Last year they built a 15 foot Skerry

had over the last couple months the fi rst boat that went over was a 44 Hinckley powerboat on 12 April.

French & Webb has been busy refi n- ishing two Buzzards Bay 30s and building two new boats.

In the main shop they have the 20 foot pocket cruiser Jewell under construction. This is a collaboration between French naval architect Francois Vivier and Clint Chase. What is interesting is that this is a kit boat, which was cut out by Hewes & company of Blue Hill. The jig has been set up and the stations are going in place. Her interior is relatively simple with a V-berth and galley. She should be completed in about three months.

French & Webb is also laying up a 39 foot powerboat designed by Fitzgerald Marine Architecture of Thomaston. Her fi rst layer, which is fi r, has been completed. Next are two diagonal 1/8 inch layers of cedar followed by another layer of ¼-inch mahogany. This will then be covered with glass. Once this is all completed the skeg will be put on and the hull fl ipped over. At the same time they will be building a mockup and the interior will not be fi nished until next winter. Two Buzzard Bay 30s have been re-

fi nished this winter. One has been sold and will now be sailed between Connecticut and Nantucket. She was originally LADY M. and is now named WACHIWI. Both Buzzards Bay 30s were completely stripped and refi nished.
