cludes interiors for Morris Yachts although there was none this winter. However they were able to pick up other smaller jobs this winter. Also to supplement the cash fl ow they are selling Yale and New England rope as well as Harken hardware.

the offi ce and he said, “Chuck liked to push it on me. He really didn’t liked people thinking he was designing powerboats. He saw it as being a negative. He wanted to be the purest, the sailboat guy. Chuck did a lot of work on the powerboats and he was pretty good at it. I did do most of the hull lines, which I learned in Hargrave’s offi ce. Jack was just the opposite of Chuck. In fact, he would tell you, you were a fool to design a boat for anybody that went sailing. Commercially he said designing sailboats is a disaster.” Presently, Mark is working on a 22 to 26 foot powerboat, which they hope is more affordable than a 28 footer he designed several years ago. He is also working on a hard top for a 90 foot motor yacht that is in Portland and refi tting a Webbers Cove 34. Despite the down turn over the last several years in new boat construction, Mark has been able to perceiver. That is probably due to the fact that he has become the go-to guy for the boatbuilders using the lobster boat hull. It used to be simple doing a boat with a V-berth, head and galley, but as things got more complicated the boatbuilders now need detailed drawings, which in the end saves them a lot of aggravation and Mark has become their savior .

used for hand-lining, spearfi shing and lob- stering. As for accommodations, she will have a berth, shower and head with storage lockers. They have made the companionway larger so the boat is more open. Up in the shelter there will be a captain’s chair at the bulkhead with an overhead console and all electronics will be fl ush mounted into the bulkhead. Out in the cockpit there are two cabinets for scuba tanks with room for 12 tanks per side. In the middle is a refrigerat- ed and a non-refrigerated tank. Further aft there is a live well which is been modifi ed from a unit sold by Atlantic Boat. They also have installed a diver door in the transom. This boat will be powered with a 405 QSL9 Cummins diesel engine. She will be done late spring or very early summer. Next year Jeff will be fi nishing off a 36 Calvin Beal model for this owner’s brother. She will have the same basic layout as this one and be done the following summer.

A. L. Pettegrow in Southwest Harbor has a Pettegrow 30 in the main shop. She came in as a hull and deck and was being fi nished off by her owner. He decided that it would be quicker to have Pettegrow fi nish the project. Presently they are putting in her interior which is almost complete. The ac- commodations include a V-berth, head and galley fi nished off in the Herreshoff style with wood trim. Up in the shelter is seating and a tackle locker. Her engine, a 440 hp Cummins 5.9 diesel with a 2:1 ZF gear is installed and hooked up. She is nearly com- plete and should be launched mid spring. Right next to the Pettegrow 30 is a Newman 36 which was in for cosmetics. The major project was redoing her bright- work and replacing a piece of wood in the brightsided trunk cabin.
There was also a 40 foot party boat in for her regular maintenance.
When including the huge number stor- age customers this yard has they will be busy.
The Hinckley Company in Manset is in the middle of their launching season. They have more than 145 boats to go in the season and all need to be made ready for the season. Some of the major work this winter has included repowering a Talaria 42 with a 440 hp Cummins diesel. A Lowell 43 lobster boat was recently sold and her new owner brought her to the yard for some fi berglass work and paint.
They also repaired her steering system and did some mechanic work, She was re- launched within a week.
Since January the paint shop has been very busy with 25 projects.
There are several major jobs pending and this could keep them busy for the sum- mer months.
Osmond’s Boat Shop on Beals Island was rented out for most of the winter. At one point the 40 foot Young Brothers DORIS MARGARET was in for a complete facelift. She was recently completed and relaunched. Another project was a camper take out trailer for “Bayview Takeout.” She was in to have a complete interior added so it was easier to cook in. She is now up the street and open the service.
Now in the shop is an Osmond 20 from
Bucks Harbor, which suffered damage to her rail. This was repaired along with her hauling patch.
On the other side of the island, Doug
Dodge is always one of the most interesting places to stop on the coast of Maine. In the shop he has a 38 footer with a 12½ foot beam and a 12 foot transom. When asked where the design came from you said Dozer, which is his dog. Over the years the dog has grown some very round bilges thanks to the neighbors. Actually this hull is very similar to TIME MACHINE, but smaller. Presently Doug is planking the hull, which is almost done. She will be gas powered and it is planned that she will be completed within a year.
