Highly reliable continuous monitoring

Gigamon has developed a highly reliable system for continuous monitoring. In a high-availability 1G or 10G infrastructure, the loss of a single device or power source cannot be allowed to jeopardize network connectivity.

Ensuring network uptime, while monitoring for threats, is paramount to a successful, Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), inline security and monitoring deployment. In the event that the security appliance is taken offline due to power failure or maintenance, it is crucial that traffic automatically bypasses the device to maintain traffic flow. As an added value, it should be possible to replicate, aggregate and filter traffic to listen-only devices such as an Intrusion Detection System (IDS). Deploying security devices at every network segment where traffic needs to be captured is cost prohibitive and processor intensive. In asymmetrically routed networks, Gigamon eliminates the need to process the same packet traversing multiple segments with powerful deduplication features. Patented Flow Mapping hardware-based filtering can further reduce the burden of processing unneeded traffic by sending only the protocols, VLAN IDs, application port numbers, or session based traffic specific to the security devices purpose.

With the bypass functionality in place, quick removal of inline security devices for maintenance, software/firmware upgrades, or simply to move

the device to another area of the network is seamless, eliminating the need to schedule downtime during off-peak hours. GigaVUE devices continually check the status of attached inline security appliances with a customisable “heartbeat” packet. Heartbeat packets are sent through the inline tool to check against any failure. In the event that the heartbeat packet isn’t returned to the GigaVUE, relays automatically open bypassing the inline appliance, allowing traffic to continue moving unobstructed. The modular-based construction of GigaVUE

Traffic Visibility Switches supports different topologies, data rates (10/100/1000Mbps through 10Gbps), and simultaneous deployment of multiple bypass modules that are complimentary to the complete set of next-generation security appliances.
