f you’re reading this and still stumped about what to give that important someone for Mother’s Day, here’s an idea: roll up this magazine, tie a nice ribbon around it, and give it to her. (Just remember to mark out the price.) The May issue of Natural Awakenings is packed with important new information for women at just about any stage in life. On pages 12 and 13, we have news about natural ways to ease pregnancy-related depression and reduce hot flashes. And our feature on “Edible Hormones,”

page 22, offers what any woman should consider encouraging news about the estro- gen boost they can get from eating certain foods. All females must deal with meno- pause at some point; isn’t it nice to know that a carefully planned diet including foods like broccoli, flax and pomegranate might offer the same benefits of hormone therapy without any of the scary side effects? And for that important someone who is also raising a teenage daughter (bless her), we offer a special gift on page 18. No, “Teen Drama Queens” is not about a new MTV reality series. It’s a candid, even clinical look at the brain and body chemistry of an adolescent girl—and it explains a lot about the emotions and behaviors that (let’s be honest) can drive a mom crazy. As Sil Reynolds, co-author of Mothering & Daugh- tering, points out, “Mothers are responsible for being the adult in the relationship as their daughters grow up. Understanding this can be a relief to both of you.” As always, we are pleased to share several great articles from local contributors.

Anyone who hasn’t taken advantage of the annual Lavender Festival in Oak Ridge can turn to page 11 to learn what they’ve been missing and why they should mark their calendars to attend the festival this year on June 15. (Hint: it’s fun and it’s free.) Cathy Scott, chief scientific officer at Everything Mushrooms on Sevier Avenue, describes two mushroom varieties that can be steeped to make tea. Some folks swear by the teas for their medicinal effects, but it’s also fine to enjoy them for their taste alone. (They keep a batch of mushroom tea steeping at the store. Go try a free cup, if you’d like.) Read about this on page 25. Finally, as longtime fans of the ambient music of husband-and-wife artists Dean

and Dudley Evenson, we were excited to learn that they’ve released a new album, Dream Space—a perfect accompaniment to yoga, bodywork, meditation or even sleep. Read our review on page 21. Here’s wishing all mothers a very happy Mother’s Day—and to all our readers, enjoy the beauty of May in Knoxville!
