Elephant memories?


This was the day the ‘circus came to town’ and people enjoyed the exciting spectacle of seeing elephants parading through the narrow streets of Looe.


These unusual pictures were found buried in the archives at Looe’s Old Guildhall Museum by the curator Barbara Birchwood Harper, who is keen to hear from anyone who has more information on the event.


It is believed the circus was based in the area of Barbican Farm, and that the elephants were brought down Barbican Hill to bathe in the sea on Looe Beach, after which they were paraded through the town.


One of the elephants was also called on another day to assist in pulling out a car stuck in the sand at Plaidy Beach.
