Request for free parking refused by Cornwall Council

Members set for Centenary Year

Looe Bowling Club members officially opened their Cen-tenary Year when town mayor David Bryan bowled the first wood in time-honoured tradition.

And the celebrations received a welcome but surprise boost when new captains John Hickman and Pat Brunskill announced that Bowls England would be sending a delegation to the Hannafore club on Wednesday, May 15, to launch the special year.

The National federation will also be naming a select side to take on Looe’s finest in a challenge match, starting at 1.30 pm, and rumours abound that the West Country’s most successful bowler, former World champion

There will be plenty of free equipment on hand to help would-be bowlers, and Cornwall Bowls will also be in attendance with their ‘Roadshow’ from which bowls essentials and clothing can be purchased.

Cornwall Council has refused a request for free parking for parents at Looe trying to get their children to school – as one of the main routes to two schools remains closed.

St Martin’s Road has been closed since the tragic landslide on March 22 claimed the life of 68- year-old Susan Norman.

Surveys and repairs are being carried out on the road, which is one of the main routes to Looe’s community and primary schools at The Barbican.

Armand Toms, county councillor for East Looe, had requested that the Riverside car park in Station Road should be made free of charge for an hour in the morning and again in the afternoon to allow parents to park there and then walk their children up the long and steep hill at Shutta.

But the council refused saying that Sandplace Road was now open as an alternative route.

However, for most parents this route via Morval, Widegates and Nomansland would mean at least 120 miles of extra travel a week.

Cllr Toms said: ‘I am very disappointed that this simple request has been refused to help out the parents of Looe during these difficult times.

‘Many cannot afford the extra fuel or the parking charges.

‘It might be okay for the senior students to walk up Shutta but for the little pre-schoolers and the other primary children it is not the best option.

‘The primary school is also quite a long way once you reach the Barbican, along a busy road at school times.

‘I shouldn’t think at this time of year the council would lose much parking revenue.

‘During the final week of last term, the council

allowed the free parking when both roads were closed.’

Meanwhile, in a report on the roadworks around Looe, issued in mid April, Paul Allen, a network manager for Cormac and the highways department, said there was no update on when St Martin’s Road could be reopened.

He said work is still progressing on putting together a design solution for St Martin’s Road on the section above Veronica Flats which collapsed in the landslide on March 22.

However, he said that Cornwall Council and Cormac have taken on board a request from businesses in Looe, following a drop-in session recently.

This means the works at Polean junction for the Millpool access in West Looe, which were due to commence soon, have been postponed until September.
