Dance show wows audience!
M
ayfield’s talented dancers had a chance to shine on Thursday 28th February and Friday 1st March
in a show choreographed by the School’s Teacher of Dance, Sophie Healey. Fifty-seven girls from Years 7-13 took part. The styles of dance included Jazz, Contemporary, Charleston, Irish, Nigerianand Hip Hop. The high standard of performance was reflected in the audience’s enthusiastic response.
Sophie Healey was pleased with the girls’ commitment: ‘I felt the show was a great success. The girls worked hard and enjoyed performing. I look forward to what can be achieved a year from now.’
The students taking part were equally happy: ‘I really enjoyed it,’ said Ana Berron (Year 9); Sally Franks (Year 7) thought it was ‘So much fun and amazing’; Tiffany Li (Year 10) said ‘I am really looking forward to doing the show next year.’
F
orty-five minutes, one bag of ingredients, three dishes; girls from Years 7-13 enjoyed an interhouse cookery competition that tested their skills and nerve –- all in a spirit of fun. On Tuesday 29th January (Junior contest –- Years 7-9)
and Tuesday 5th February (Senior contest –- Years 10- 13) teams gathered in the Food & Nutrition kitchen, along with members of staff acting as judges. These included Sharon Rothero, Head of Food & Nutrition, who also organised the event and was very happy with the girls’ efforts.
‘In the Junior competition,’ she says, ‘all the girls came well
organised and with a plan of what they wanted to cook. There were 45 minutes of frenetic cooking and the dishes presented were of exceptional standard, with some delicious flavours. This made it very difficult for the judges to choose a winner. The girls had great fun, but there was a great sense of relief when all the dishes were on the table!’
Junior results: 1st – Astor: Team leader Sophie Foster 2nd – Curie 3rd – Glennie 4th – Brontë
Mrs Rothero was equally happy with the Senior competition. ‘Unfortunately,’ she says, ‘Brontë did not have a full team, but were still able to cook two dishes. All years were represented, but there was a particularly good turnout from Year 10. Some very ambitious dishes were attempted considering the girls only had 45 minutes -- choux pastry, chocolate mousse and brownies, for example. Everyone obviously enjoyed the experience and they were very proud of themselves.’
Senior results: 1st – Glennie: Team leader Polly Hickish 2nd – Curie 3rd – Astor 4th – Brontë
