very Mayfield student knows that this year marks the 150th
anniversary of the day, in 1863, that Cornelia Connelly first set eyes upon and then acquired the Old Palace at Mayfield, which was to become the School. This year’s festivities began, in January, with a celebratory mass that was just the start of an exciting programme of events.
A Time Capsule The girls had their own anniversary project in the Spring Term: a time capsule to be buried in the new Sixth Form Centre on Parents’ Day (Saturday 22nd June). It is hoped that in 2063 some of the same students will mark The Old Palace’s 200th anniversary by returning to open the capsule.
In the Spring and Summer Terms, pupils also have the chance to compete for the 150th Anniversary Project Prize. The topic is ‘Journey’. The entries will be judged by explorer Dr Mike Stroud, recipient of the Polar Medal. It is an appropriate subject as the school continues its own journey beyond its 150th year.
Jam Tarts and Gingerbread Former students can attend a special picnic on Sunday 19th May, at this year’s Old Cornelian Anniversary Reunion. The event, in honour of the outing that introduced Cornelia Connelly and her pupils to the Old Palace, will feature Victorian fare - including jam tarts and gingerbread like those eaten at that first picnic.
Current students have their own picnic on Thursday 23rd May. On that same date Old Cornelians are invited to become 2013 Mayfield girls for a day, attending liturgy and morning classes. They will then join The Pupils’ Picnic.
Sixth Form Centre and Summer Ball On Saturday 15th June, the Friends’ Summer Ball will be a fundraiser for the new Sixth Form Centre, a first look at which will be one of the highlights of Parents’ Day (Saturday 22nd June).
Heritage Sunday 15th September will see students giving guided tours of The Chapel, Cloister, Courtyard and Concert Hall, as part of Heritage Open Days – a national programme that offers community access to historic buildings. There will be an exhibition relating to the events of 1863.
A Special Mass On Sunday 17th November, there will be a special mass to bring the celebrations to a close. Papal Nuncio His Most Reverend Excellency Antonio Mennini will officiate. To follow these and other anniversary events, visit

Mayfield girls ski in the British Schoolgirls' Races 2013
O
n Friday 25th January, three Mayfield girls left for Flaine in the Grand Massif region of France to ski in the British Schoolgirls’ Races 2013.
The girls –- Trix Morley (Year 7), Georgia Edwards (Year 10) and Charlotte Beraud (Year 10) –- were accompanied by staff members Kathryn Daughtrey (who organised the trip), Deirdre Rowe and Kathryn’s daughter, Charlotte, who came along to help.
On Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th January, the girls received tuition in slalom and giant slalom skiing from an ESF (Ecole du Ski Français)instructor. The competition itself was held on Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th January. Thirty-eight schools and clubs took part including many schools which devote considerable resources to skiing and have large teams from which to choose entrants, making the competition fierce for Mayfield’s plucky three.
‘Our girls skied well, bravely, and were a great credit to the school,’ says Kathryn Daughtrey. ‘They skied their hearts out and were clearly delighted that they achieved good scores and came down in one piece, without falling.’ Mayfield came 42nd overall out of 52 teams.
‘It is an improvement on last year and is a result that St Leonards-Mayfield should be very proud of,’ says Mrs Daughtrey.
Asked how she felt about the competition, Trix Morley said: ‘Going on the ski trip was a brilliant experience. I want to go again next year and will definitely encourage other girls to go!’
Georgia Edwards agrees: ‘It is very hard to pick a best moment because the whole trip was amazing. I enjoyed it so much and I am very proud of all the team. I hope that we can all constantly improve and hopefully go back next year.’
