New signs ‘making road worse’

SAFETY concerns over new pri- ority traffic signs in Leybourne’s Castle Way were raised by resi- dents at the parish council’s an- nual meeting. The long-awaited notices and

white lines were installed to slow traffic down. However, it is claimed that the road is now more dangerous with drivers speeding along lay-bys in the road to avoid stopping to give way to oncoming traffic. The system was recom- mended four years ago by KCC consultants Jacobs in a safety audit on the A228. Chicanes were built to prevent rat-run- ning between the M20 and A20 but the priority signs were only added last month.

The parish council has asked

for residents’ views on its web- site, and says that possible solu- tions for the safety concerns are putting in a left turn only at the junction with the A228 or clos- ing the road altogether. It added that figures for traffic

Many traders are con- sidering changing banks, as they feel NatWest was not pro- viding the service they wanted. “The marketing slogan of ‘Helpful Banking’ that NatWest use is sounding very hollow to the many Snodland business customers at the moment,” Alan went on. “Snodland is big enough and vibrant enough to

need a bank that is open every day of the week, and any reduc- tion of hourswill not only be to the detriment of NatWest and also to Snodland High Street. “The move comes across as

being the thin edge of the wedge. How long will it be be- fore the branch closes com- pletely? Once again someone in an ivory tower somewhere has obviously taken a decision without any thought to the im- pact it will have on the local community.”

Atrial of theleftturnonly system would be discussed by the parish council with Kent Highways engineers in the hope of finding a way to make the junction safer. The road is scheduled for resurfacing when the white lines and parking restrictions will be re-installed.

Gas supply work THE mystery of why holes were being dug in so many footpaths and roads in Snod- land has been solved. Agas governor has been in- stalled in the cricketmeadow. A spokesman for Southern GasNetworks said: “Gas gov- ernors help us provide a safe and reliable supply of gas across the network.” The new plastic pipes were placed inside the old pipes which is cheaper.
