What advice would you give to a student who is coming to London to study?


London is the ideal base from which to gain qualifications in English law as it’s a key commercial and financial centre and home to many of the world’s leading international law firms.


The LL.M in International Legal Practice was created in conjunction with the IBA to meet the career aspirations of modern international lawyers. It is an internationally recognised professional qualification aimed at building cross-border legal knowledge.

Has the economic downturn affected the University as a whole?


One positive impact of an economic downturn is that it makes businesses look at how they can work smarter. Law firms, which are traditionally slow to change, are beginning to embrace technology in learning, which offers the University new opportunities.


Throughout this period we have continued to expand and innovate. We have opened new UK centres, formed new links with global law schools and launched new programmes. The introduction of our LL.B law degree last year was the most successful launch of a full time undergraduate LLB in England and Wales in the last decade. This year we are introducing our unique LL.M Legal Practice Course (LL.M LPC), which combines the LPC with a Master of Laws qualification, and from 2014 will increase our range of undergraduate degrees to eight, including an LL.B (Hons) Law with International Legal Practice.


Student mobility and the globalisation of education continue to increase year on year? Do you think that the USA and UK will lose their dominant positions over the next ten years?


As long as English law remains the ‘global law’ of international commerce then the UK will sustain its position as the world leader in legal services. However the danger comes if we become complacent and fail to respond to competition and adapt quickly to 21st-century market conditions. We must do all we can to protect and promote English law and as part of this we must make the English legal qualification more access
