INTERVIEW WITH CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LAW
Tell us a little bit about your background. What was your career path to becoming Chief Executive?
I have a PhD in corporate governance and have taught in law schools in the UK, USA and Australia. I was formerly Dean of Nottingham Law School and founding Managing Director of Nottingham Law School Ltd from 1989 to1996. I have widespread experience in providing training and development in law firms, in industry and in the public sector.
I have been Chief Executive of The College of Law since 1996, and have overseen a period of significant growth, including the development of a national network of centres, new learning programmes and close links with the legal profession both in the UK and internationally - culminating in the award of university title in 2012.
What are your biggest challenges as Chief Executive?
The biggest challenge is keeping up with so many developments in the legal services market, not just domestically but globally. The impact is being felt of a number of different factors, all of which are happening at the same time: the economic downturn, the fact that law firms are looking at their business models, globalisation of the student market, new technology, commoditisation of the legal services market and the emergence of new legal services hubs across the globe. All of this means that there’s never a dull moment in the job and
I’m happy with the challenge but you’ve got to stay focused.
