Masterclass exposes risks and benefits of social media

A Business Club masterclass organised by Paris Smith left delegates inspired to market their businesses safely using new marketing technology which embraces social media.

More than 50 people attended the event at the De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel, Southampton, where four speakers explored the risks and benefits of social media.

Ted Nash, head of digital product innovation at News International, described a new era, dubbed ‘Generation C‘, which focused on the idea that anyone born after 1980 is ‘connected‘ through social media and the Internet. He spoke about how important it is for businesses to step up to the mark and start to engage with social media.

Other speakers included PR and media expert Lena Samuels of Wessex Media Group and BBC Radio Solent. Her talk, Social Media – Risky Business?, explored the dynamic between the marketing

opportunities posed by social media and the risks to a brand if the use is not aligned to business and campaign goals and objectives.

David Roath (pictured), partner in Paris Smith‘s employment, department addressed the importance of having a social media usage policy and gave case law examples of what happens when employees get it wrong, while Paul Mewett, head of intelligence at Grant Thornton revealed how much you reveal about yourself with your digital footprint.

Managing partner at Moore Blatch, David Thompson, said the merger was a key milestone in expansion plans: ”We have been in Richmond for six years and this is part of our long-term strategy for growth, particularly in property services and to link

our offices along the south coast with London.

”We have been looking to increase our presence in Richmond as we grow to become one of the leading firms in south west London and Saunders & Company is a perfect fit. Both firms pride themselves on offering a bespoke legal service to discerning clients.”

Thompson added that the profile of Moore Blatch‘s private clients in the south west mirrors that of Saunders & Company and he believes the newly-merged operation is a good strategic fit for in-house expertise.
