Thief caught
red-handed PCSO MATT Williams said thefts from cars in the Tovil area, and further afield, had been reduced after a culprit was caught and jailed. Mr Williams said vehicles
had been broken into in Caernarvon Drive, The Stam- pers, Gleneagles Drive and Church Street before the thief was caught red-handed in Maidstone High Street. MrWilliams said: “We found
the person in theHigh Street, in the middle of the day, with a shopping trolley full of stolen stuff, including a safe. He’s now back in prison and the thefts have stopped.”
New moorings THE council was reminded that planning permission had been granted for new moorings near Millers Wharf. Borough Cllr Mike Hogg said
that he had been informed that the applicants did not intend to close a well-used footpath that runs alongside the river be- tween the Millers Wharf and Tovil Footbridge. Tovil Parish Council has applied to KCC to adopt the riverside footpath as a public right of way, which will safeguard the path for the future in case the land is later sold on.
Speeding cars A COUNCILLOR said he had witnessed motorbikes driving fast through Tovil. A second said she had reported a driver to police for twice performing dangerous “handbrake turns” in the village. Pub work delayed by plans confusion WORK on converting the former Victory Inn in Farleigh Lane into flats was halted when it was discovered architects’ drawings were wrong. Cllr Barry Beardwell said the mistake was with the roof and
added that if the building had been constructed as per the drawings people would have “walked into the roof when they went up- stairs”. Councillors voted to approve the amended design.
Julie is new councillor
JULIE Kairis has been co-opted on to the council to replace Rachel Diment, who has moved away. Ms Kairis lives in Forest Hill
and has been a Tovil resident all her life. She was a pupil at the local school when it was St Stephen’s and also attended South Borough Girls’ School. Julie worked in the pre- school and school, being a committee chair and a school
governor. She is an early years professional, an early years as- sessor and a freelance early years inspector, and is just about to manage her own nurs- ery in ParkWood. Julie, pictured right, feels she
has a strong sense of commu- nity and thinks that now that her children have grown and her time is more her own, she would like to give something back to the community in which she was raised.

Roof changes KENT Fire and Rescue Service has agreed to change the design of the roof on a proposed new building at its headquarters after both Tovil Parish Council and the Valley Conservation Society objected. The roof was going to be
made of steel and rising from 3.5 to 5.8m high. It will now be lower and will blend in better with the surrounding buildings at The Godlands site off Straw Mill Hill.
