Big Ben fights back joyful tears Picks Bates U. to play his college football

en Coulibaly - Big Ben Coulibaly - the talented

3,000 yard career rusher for the Boys Latin Warriors, stood at the microphone at his school’s recent press conference and tried to hold back tears after he announced his decision to attend Bates University. But before he could say his next few words, Big Ben did break down and cry. Tears trickled down his face as he struggled for his words. It took a good three minutes before Couil- baly could finish speaking. “I love you guys so much, I thank all of you for supporting me,” said Coulibaly who stood with his Bates University cap sitting comfortably on his head. “The reason I chose Bates University ia because it’s one of the top academic schools in the nation. It’s up there with Princeton, Harvard and Drexel. Bates University is a great aca- demic school. I had the op- portunity to be a walk-on at Division I programs, but I decided not to do that. And I had a lot of offers from Division II schools. But I decided not to do that. But when I visited Bates Univer- sity, it felt like home. I liked Bates University so much and the environment is so great. And honestly, I just decided I rather take a high- class education than take a Division I football college scholarship. So…I decided to attend Bates University to play my college football career.”

Ben Coulibaly survived his ten minute speech at the podium while his entire family sat and watched him pour out his speech. Coulibaly was among three other teammates at the March 1st press confer- ence who delivered their speeches. Couilbaly’s mother and father, along with a many relatives, were there inside the school’s din- ing hall supporting the star running back’s decision to attend Bates University on a full four-year scholarship “We chose Bates University because it’s among the Top 25 colleges in the country,” said Ben’s father, Adaman Coulibaly. “Right now, Ben has a full scholarship and I

don’t have to worry about spending money on him for college. It’s a great surprise. The scholarship pays for everything. All I have to worry about is paying for his transportation to college and back.”

This was a great gift for Ben Coulibaly and his family. Ben’s parents are from Mali, West Africa. Ben’s father moved to Philadelphia in 1990 and became a full-time Cab driver. He sent for Ben’s mother and later they gave birth to their star high

school football player. “I never imagined Ben would play football,” said his proud father. “I wanted him to finish his education first. I told him I had no money to send him to col- lege. I knew college would cost him more than $60,000. I told him that I didn’t have that kind of money. I told him he would have to find the opportunity to college for free on a full scholarship. He would have to find a college that would give him a scholarship. When Bates

University offered him the scholarship, they offered him so much. It was too good of an offer for him to turn down.

With his three other team- mates at the press confer- ence, Coulibaly felt the most lucky of the three. Erik Lark, a star quarterback at Boys Latin, will be attending West Chester University. Tahir Perlote, a star wide

receiver for Boys Latin, also accepted a scholarship to West Chester University. And Boys Latin lineman David Peterson will be at- tending Kutztown Univer- sity. All four players helped the Boys Latin football team appear two years in the playoffs and made the War- riors into a Public League powerhouse.

The afternoon press confer- ence ended with the four Boys Latin players hugging friends and family mem- bers. Everybody was full of joy and happiness.
