HPW sustainable Paultons Park building nominated for award
HPW Architecture is celebrating after Sustain Magazine nominated its Peppa Pig World project at Paultons Park in its 2013 awards.
The Ower-based practice, which specialises in designing environmentally-sustainable buildings, is shortlisted in the Retail, Hospitality & Tourism category.
Judges at the internationally- recognised awards were wowed by how the HPW team met the challenge of producing a 10,000 sq ft building in a national park that enhanced the natural environment and minimised energy use.
Beneath a striking wildflower roof sprouting native New Forest vegetation, the building houses a fully-themed Indoor Play Area, Daddy Pig’s Big Tummy Café and Peppa Pig’s Toy Shop. The building itself has a super- insulated shell, ventilating wind catchers, sustainable drainage and underfloor heating behind locally-sourced indigenous timber rainscreen cladding, putting it
at the forefront of sustainable development.
Gary Wilburn, creative director at HPW, said: “This has been a terrific project to be involved with because of the sustainable innovation we have been able to include which has made the building quite unique and at the forefront of a low carbon economy.
“The rural location of the project and the sensitivities of working
in a national park meant we faced a number of challenges in the design stage. As well as working closely with the team at Paultons Park, we consulted extensively with the New Forest National Park Authority to ensure the building had minimal visual impact to the surrounding area.“
The awards ceremony takes place on March 5 in London.
