Just a short journey from the bustling centre of Bradford, you’ll find green spaces, hills to climb, tranquil places to relax in and two Walkers are Welcome towns, Ilkley and Baildon.
The former spa town of Ilkley has been accepted into the scheme for places that offer something special for walkers. Look out for the Beck Stone on the moor where you’ll see Pip Hall’s engraving of a new Simon Armitage poem. Or have a go at grit stone bouldering on the distinctive Cow and Calf Rocks.
The River Wharfe attracts many anglers who can buy permits from the Ilkley Visitor Information Centre. Water lovers may also enjoy a dip in Ilkley Lido!

If you enjoy the challenge of a long distance walking route, you can choose from the Dales Way in Ilkley, Ebor Way or the Bradford Millennium Way. The Dales High Way starts in Saltaire before heading through the high country of the Yorkshire Dales.
Combine walking with literary inspiration, following the Bronte Way and exploring the dramatic landscape to Top Withens, which evokes Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights.
If you enjoy more gentle strolls and a different view, a walk along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal is a great option.

The South Pennines Walk and Ride Festival in September is a great way to discover new routes and meet people. The Visit Bradford website has full details of guided walks and self-guided routes.
