Centre offers a taste of

the Olympics

A RIDING centre in Hayle can offer a real taste of the Olympics to its clients thanks to an unusual purchase! Old Mill Stables, a riding school and equestrian centre in Hayle, teamed up with Riding for the Disabled to purchase 50 tonnes of the Olympic surface which was at Greenwich Park last summer. The surface has been declared ‘a dream to ride on’ by one of the three appren- tices with Cornwall College who are currently working at the centre and are proving that apprenticeships are a great way to get ahead.

Jade Booton, from St Ives, has just completed her horse care and management ad- vanced apprenticeship with Duchy College and Old Mill Stables and works as head girl at the stables.

Scholarship

She has just received a schol- arship to go to Talland School of Equitation in Gloucester- shire to enhance her training. Jade said: ‘I’m going to be working with Pammy Hutton from Talland Equestrian Cen- tre so that’s really exciting. The apprenticeship has been great; it’s been completely work based which is perfect be- cause I’m always working at the stables and using my skills on a day-to-day basis.

I’ve enjoyed having more responsibility and improving my management skills. ‘As for the Olympic surface – it’s really amazing to have it here, there’s no dust and it’s phenomenal for the dis- abled riders, a dream to ride on and really inspiring to know

Jade is helping to train two apprentices at the stables, Sarah Twigg from Hayle and Amy Roberts from St Ives, who are studying the work-based horse care level 2 apprentice- ship.

During the apprenticeship the girls learn about every- thing from riding to stable management and general yard and day-to-day duties.

Old Mill Stables proprietor Louise Ridge explained how working with Duchy College has benefited her: ‘It’s been so beneficial; we now have three

apprentices on our staff and their skills and knowledge cas- cades down to the rest of the team.
