Cosy up in the most stylish way
WITH households brimming – just how comfortable is your home? With winter beckon- ing, a comfort check- list may be in order. Start underfoot, as cold floors mean cold homes.
If starting a project from scratch then look to include under-floor heating – it’s a must
for our damp and chilly climate. With a comfortable ambient temperate un- derfoot, one is free to choose chillier sur- faces. Stone, slate and ceramic, even timber, can feel cool to the touch at this time of the year. For those already in possession of a hand- some, yet cooler, fin-
ish, do not feel pre- cious about covering some or a generous portion of a living zone with a cosy rug. A handsomely sized rug helps unify seat- ing arrangements and defines a chill-out zone from main traffic areas.
In the dining or breakfast room, a large rug, that carries both dining table and dining chairs (whether pushed un- der the table, or pulled out), helps with acoustics and the tac- tile ambience of an in- terior that can other- wise be limited to hard surfaces.
Go all out and fit wall-to-wall wool car- pet – the very best in tactile and comfort- able living. It is sec- ond to none for bed-
rooms and advisable on stairs and landings that can be an acoustic disaster in busy family house- holds.
Eliminate drafty windows with snug-fit- ting seals and intro- duce warmer curtains for the winter season. Fit poles or curtain tracks wider on the re- veals, allowing for a greater cover-up, opt for full-length curtains that fall onto the floor, trapping drafts, and add an interlining be- tween the curtain and lining fabrics. This fleecy, blankety layer not only equates to double glazing, but also ensures hand- sewn headings are beautifully formed and that the curtains will drape exquisitely into their folds for
years to come. Treat doors, open- ings and archways to similar curtaining so- lutions, cosying up drafty doors and areas that offer fantastic open plan living in the spring and summer, but are somewhat cav- ernous for the winter. Slender bespoke draft-excluding door cushions may echo a curtain fabric for less obtrusive, yet practi- cal furnishing.
Dwarf
Living rooms need to include as many so- fas as appropriate! Beautifully sprung, these sofas will be sized and scaled to fit the interior.
Do not dwarf a small living room with clumsy examples, cumbersome arms and tall backs.
Where space allows,
serve your sofa with a plethora of pouffes, stools, run-ups and a centrepiece uphol- stered ottoman.
All of these allow for several additional perches when num- bers swell, but for the majority of time serve as comfortable footrests.
Adorn your sofas and chairs with a gen- erous display of scat- ter cushions – with the depth of the sofa planned to accommo- date their extra bulk. Comfortable dining chairs are all too often in short supply – with fidgeting guests after an hour of feasting. Look to include uphol- stered examples, stuffed seats and can- ter levered chairs with plenty of flex.
In the bedroom, a new bed or mattress may be the answer – or at the very least, a 90° turn of one’s exist- ing mattress!
High-quality duvets and pillows enhance one’s everyday living and offer huge returns in terms of sleep com- fort.
A final glimpse around the home may flag up some lighting conundrums. Keep the atmos- phere ambient and subdued, while provid- ing plenty of task lighting solutions where needed.
It’s a tricky balance, but one that can be achieved – flexibility being the key ingredi- ent.
