Movember men raise vital funds
ENGINEERS at Duchy College Rosewarne showcased their Movember masterpieces as the monthly charity event drew to a close with a judging session from the college’s ‘Mo Sistas’! Staff have been supporting this year’s Movember campaign, where growing a moustache helps to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men. Land-based engineering lec- turer Danny Sellors, who organ- ised the event at Rosewarne, said: ‘This is a campaign close to my heart and I’ve always wanted to raise money for it. ‘It’s been great fun for the whole campus and has definitely brought the men of Duchy Col- lege closer together!’
Those taking part gathered to be judged on their Mo style and shape, thickness, Mo attitude and most dramatic change. The overall winner was farm manager Nick Pascoe, who took home the special Mo trophy. Administrator and judge Sue Thomas said: ‘It was very close, there were some great efforts. ‘The group have had lots of support throughout the college and thanks to Danny for organ- ising it.’
Between them the lads have managed to raise more than £180 for the cause.

SAMBA queens Mia Paige-White and Morwenna Bilham
Lighting up the town
A RECORD number of Re- druth School students were among the stars which lit up the annual Christmas lights parade.
The students had been ex- tremely busy in the run-up to the parade creating artwork based on the theme of angels and all the Year 7s took part in workshops to make illumi- nated paper lanterns.
The Samba Band had also been practising very hard for the event.
The artwork, decorated with hundreds of fairy lights, looked fantastic as happy stu- dents paraded up through the
town with large crowds cheering them on.
The Samba band, ably led by Morwenna Bilham, were at the head of the procession and sounded amazing, adding greatly to the carnival atmos- phere.
The parade grows bigger and better every year and is an excellent way for the stu- dents to show off their fantas- tic work to the local commu- nity.
More than 80 students actu- ally took part in the parade and hundreds of spectators came out to watch.
CORNWALL Council has submitted its bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for £9.8m match- funding for a scheme to create a proposed state- of-the-art facility in Re- druth.
The million dollar bid
The aim is to provide a home for Cornwall’s treasure trove of his- toric manuscripts, books, photographs, maps and recordings. With the working ti- tle of ‘Kresen Kernow – a new home for the sto- ries of Cornwall’, it is
proposed that the new centre will be built on the former brewery site in Redruth and will im- prove access to and house the many trea- sures that reflect Corn- wall’s long, rich and vi- brant heritage and its international impact. It will also create an exhibition space to host Cornish manuscripts held elsewhere, while safeguarding an his- toric building in the centre of a World Her- itage Site, enhance the

public realm and help regenerate the area re- sulting in huge eco- nomic benefits, esti- mated to be around £1.7m a year, for Re- druth.
Cornwall Council cabinet member for cul- ture Joan Symons said: ‘Our submission, which includes the fact that Redruth is already home to a number of cultural hubs, and takes into account the poten- tial to open up and re- generate the currently
derelict brewery site, will bolster Cornwall’s bid for support from the Heritage Lottery Fund at the highly competi- tive national level for grants above £5m.
Success
‘The bid we have sub- mitted will be supple- mented by a visit from representatives from the HLF trustees and of- ficers in spring 2013 to see the site and hear about our ambitions for the project. ‘We hope that every-

one will help to make their visit a success and show that the whole of Cornwall is behind the bid.’
The trustees will visit all the projects which have made an applica- tion before meeting to assess them in April. If successful at this stage, there will be an 18-month project devel- opment period to con- sult researchers, staff, volunteers and poten- tial new audiences on the building design, ser- vices and Cornwall- wide activity pro- gramme.
Cllr Symons adds: ‘This project is a prior- ity in the council’s Cul- ture White Paper and will transform access to
the extensive historic resources currently held across a number of sites.
‘It will also offer a be- spoke, modern facility which will enable new relationships with part- ners to provide greater public access to the key Cornish manuscripts held in the collections of those institutions across Britain and be- yond.
‘It will also ensure that the council meets its statutory responsi- bilities to care for its archives appropriately and fulfills legal re- quirements with regard to access to informa- tion.’
