Maryland fl ags. I met MHIB Executive Direc- tor Ross Peddicord and his staff at the Eques- trian Center at about 4 pm. We fi rst met with the Michigan mounted police unit and two Canadians from the Toronto mounted po- lice. T e Michigan horses are a mix of colors and sizes. T e Canadian horses are around 17 hands, calm and strongly built. Wisconsin sent three therapeutic horses from At Ease T erapeutic (which assists veterans): Misty, Zippy and Chavez. T e At Ease trailer broke down in Morgantown, West Virginia, but the group persevered and made it to Maryland. T ey were not turning back to Wisconsin! Meanwhile, the Culver Military Academy in Indiana––which has been participating in
the inaugural parade since 1923––brought 80 horses, mostly black. T e other two equestrian units in the parade were not stabled at PGEC: the Cais- son unit from Arlington Cemetery, and leaders from Montana, including Sena- tor Baucus, who rode horses borrowed from Virginia. parade, the trailers motor- cade to L’Enfant Plaza with special security, hay and water troughs, vets, warming tents for the horses, and a large group of military specialists to help them with the parade and with anything that might go wrong. We were very proud to welcome the horses to Maryland. We have lots of photos and videos taken by Val D’Ambrosio and Vanessa Or- lando. Jane Seigler, the vice presi- dent and president-elect of the Maryland Horse Council, joined us to support the eff ort. After the intense briefi ng on logistics and se- curity, we off ered our new friends from across the country pizza and

soda hospitality. T e pizza was gone in a fl ash. We also started our own plans for having a Mary- land equestrian group in the inaugural parade in four years. It was an honor, a pleasure and fun to cele- brate the peaceful transfer of power in democracy ac- companied by horses and their enthusiastic riders and entourage.
Kudos to MD County Farm Bureaus Former Maryland Horse Council treasurer
Keith Wills continues to lead, these days as the president of the Baltimore County Farm Bureau. A program Keith launched, “Ag Facts” was recognized by the American Farm Bureau Federation as an innovative program idea. And, course, “Ag Facts” includes horse facts!

T e photos from the Lisbon Horse Parade in the January 2013 issue that were credited to Amy Beall should have been credited to Jill Myers Photography.
