Golf is a good walk spoiled Mark Twain

Its crowning glory for golfers though is the 7000 yard championship course featuring fairways dotted with oak and beech trees and tricky, well-guarded greens.

It’s immense!

You’ll also leap for joy when you discover Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf & Spa set in 360 acres of breath-taking Cheshire countryside. It’s a luxury hotel that mixes traditional values with a contemporary design & comfort. A trio of treats awaits including the 18-hole Championship and Premier Golf Courses and the 9-hole Arderne course that have helped to establish the site as distinctive world class championship golf venue.

The Championship Course opened in 1990, and was named 'Golf Course of the Year' in 1995, and is definitely the star of Portal's golfing complex.

Its designer, Donald Steel has created a challenge that is characterized by unique and distinctive holes; expansive water hazards and cascading waterfalls are among the tests.

The signature is typical of Steel's magnificent 7,037 yard layout - the long third tips the scales at 607 yards, with a green guarded by a beautiful lake.

One of the most spectacular golf courses you’ll ever find is at The Mere Golf Resort & Spa near Knutsford. It was designed by James Braid and is surrounded by breathtaking Cheshire parkland, making it undoubtedly one of the best prepared and well-conditioned golf courses in the North of England.

The 18 hole, 6,882 -yard, par-71 course was created out of 150 acres of Cheshire

countryside in 1934 and the surrounding mature trees, rhododendron bushes and the lakeside setting add considerable charm, as well as providing challenging hazards!

Water, ravines and thick vegetation have been incorporated into the layout so that care and accuracy are demanded both off the tees and on the greens.

To prepare for the challenges of The Mere's golf course, the venue offers players a unique, floating golf ball driving range, two-tier pitching green, putting green and bunker practice area where you can warm up before a round.

Over the years, The Mere has hosted several high profile championship tournaments. They are currently the regional venue for the qualifying round of the R & A Open Championship.

Another classic course is available at De Vere Venues Wychwood Park.

The hotel is surrounded by a beautiful PGA European-tour standard golf course covering 7213 yards off the championship tees with wonderful undulating views of the Cheshire countryside en route; enough to keep even the most traditional golfer beaming with pleasure!

Hazards are provided by numerous lakes, streams & bunkers.

Golf is a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose
