our picturesque MARKET TOWNS
North Yorkshire Market Towns owe their existence to the rural way of life dating back centuries. People in farming communities did not travel like people today. Their lives revolved around the village or hamlet near where they worked.
Early markets were held after Church on Sundays the time when people got together. Soon the hamlets became villages others became Towns and more formal markets were established.
Today everyone loves a Market. The chance to visit an early departmental store entrances us all and even though the livestock aspect has gone from most Towns the rebirth of local foods and crafts has rekindled huge interest in these outside shopping ‘emporiums’. As local centres they offer a clear vision of yesteryear but have adapted themselves throughout the centuries to provide the needs of today. Visit one on Market Day and try to leave without buying something! Bet you can’t!
