Guest Houses (GH) tend to have more than three rooms and may offer dinner to their guests. Some may be licensed. Bed and Breakfasts (BB) generally accommodate no more than six people. Restaurants with Rooms generally offer a small number of bedrooms in their licensed restaurant, with all the facilities you would expect and breakfast.


Self-catering accommodation: The layout and design of the accommodation and range and quality of the kitchen equipment is assessed, as well as the quality and comfort of the bedrooms and bathrooms and most importantly cleanliness. Stars awarded range from one to five stars.


Holiday, touring and camping parks: VisitEngland awards star ratings and the AA pennants, reflecting the overall quality of the park from one to five stars/pennants – five being reserved for parks of exceptional quality.


National Accessible Scheme


M1 – Mobility level 1: Typically suitable for a person with sufficient mobility to climb a flight of steps but would benefit from fixtures and fittings to aid balance.


M2 – Mobility level 2: Typically suitable for a person with restricted walking ability and for those that may need to use a wheelchair some of the time and can negotiate a maximum of three steps.

Green Awards


Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS): Assessed under environmental criteria such as energy efficiency, recycling, use of local produce and support of public transport, awarded Bronze, Silver or Gold.


David Bellamy Conservation Award: Gold, Silver or Bronze awarded to holiday parks demonstrating active concern for the environment, from the protection of plant and animal habitats to energy efficiency and recycling.

VisitEngland Breakfast Award: This award recognises those hotels and B&Bs where the owners, managers, chefs and staff have gone the extra mile to ensure the breakfast will exceed expectations.


Welcome Host: A nationally recognised customer care initiative promoting courtesy and service.
