School’s delight at Ofsted upgrade

DELIGHTED staff, pupils and governors at Brookfield Junior School, Larkfield, are celebrat- ing after the school was up- graded from satisfactory to “good” by Ofsted. The latest report said: “As a

result of good leadership and management, the school has improved since its last inspec- tion. Teaching is now good and any inadequate practice has been eradicated.” Pupils’ achievement was praised as good and improving rapidly, ensuring they learn well and make good progress. Attainment continued to rise. Disabled pupils, those with special needs and those eligible for free school mealswere mak- ing good and at times outstand- ing progress as a result of the tailored support they receive. The quality of teaching and

the behaviour and safety of pupils were good, and staff and governors support the school’s self-evaluation and develop- ment plans well. To become outstanding, the school, in Swallow Road, should raise attainment so that the proportion of pupils reach- ing the expected levels in Eng- lish andmaths is above average. It should also secure a greater proportion of outstanding les- sons.

Head Melanie Blewer said

she was proud the school had moved forward. She said: “For the last three years we have em- braced the challenges we faced, worked extremely hard as a supportive team and kept our goal in focus. Our good judge- ment is justly deserved. “There are always aspects to improve and areas to develop, but this is our time to say thank you to all who have supported us along the way.”

To celebrate, the children re- leased hundreds of blue bal- loons into the sky. Anyone who found a balloonwas asked to re- turn the card to the school so its journey could be tracked. She added that the day of the balloon release marked school secretary Pauline Horne’s 65th birthday and retirement after 20 years of service. Mrs Blewer and Mrs Horne are pictured rightwith some of the children.

Fourteen of the 17 pupils to take the test at Offham were successful, while in Ryarsh, 11 out of 14 made the grade.

Mereworth School received

praise in its 2010 Ofsted for having improved rapidly fol- lowing a “period of instability”. Mrs Moore said: “The high

scores this year reflect the time and effort the children and par- ents have put into preparing for the test, as well as the wonder- ful attitude our children show to their learning. “We know that every child at

the school, whether they sat the Kent Test or not, put their max- imum effort into all they do.We are proud of each and every one of them.” Other local results included: Lunsford Primary, Larkfield: 45% Kings Hill: 43% Leybourne: 42% Wateringbury: 35% Discovery School, Kings Hill: 33%
