Ladies celebrate WI anniversary

HAM Hill & SnodlandWomens In- stitute has celebrated 90 years of friendship, fun and education. Starting in

Ham Hill, resi- dents of Snod- land began joining and the name changed in the 1920s. Sheila Miles (pictured), of Orchard Way,

joined in the 1970s. Now treasurer of West Kent, she said: “Then we had about 75 members. Now we only have 30 members, because there are so many ways for peo- ple to spend their leisure time.” Ham Hill & Snodland is one of

nine WIs in the Malling division and is part ofWest Kent, with 180 WIs and 7,000 members. Mem- bers meet in the Devonshire Rooms on the second Wednes- day of the month, when there are demonstrations or speakers. “The Malling division has a committee which organises events, and at county level there are events throughout the year,” Sheila added. “We have a huge voice in cam- paigns such as opposing the clo- sure of post offices, libraries and fair prices for dairy farmers.” She urged any newcomers to Snodland to join the WI, where they will find friendship and sup- port.

Lest we forget

A LARGEnumber of residents lined the streets of Snodland for the RemembranceDay parade from Holmesdale Technology College to attend the service at the cemetery. The parade was led by the 17th Tonbridge

Scout and Guide Band and included the Army cadets, the police, Scouts, Brownies and rep- resentatives of the town council and the Snod- land Partnership. The service was taken by Rev Hugh Broad-

bent, Rector of Snodland, Father Peter Soper of the Catholic Church and Avrel Cole, of the Salvation Army, who told the congregation there had been 52 deaths in conflict since the same time last year. Wreaths were laid, including one from MOTHS (Memorable Order of Tin Hats) who had laid wreaths earlier in the day at a Re- membrance Day service at Christ Church, Malling Road.
