Town Talk

RESIDENTS in Charles Close, Snodland, whose gardens back on to Birling Road, are com- plaining about the height of the trees keeping the sun out. Vince and Joan O’Connell have

been asking for help from Ton- bridge & Malling Borough Coun- cil and Kent County Council. “This year we emailed KCC

and said ‘the trees are getting very big, please top them so we have some light’, but nothing happened. “I phoned up and was told it

was not the council’s policy to give us light, it was our problem. I asked what would happen if we

topped the trees and he said we would be prosecuted for damag- ing council property.” Vince said they had paid £10,500 for solar panels two years ago, which had been a waste of money. “Wehavenosun in thegar-

den and nothing grows there,” he added. Edith Roots has two large

trees next to her house, as well as one at the end of her garden. She said: “I have been here

for 10 years and they are now the worst ever. I have to switch on my light in the kitchen. I have contacted KCC but they don’t

seem to be interested. I am wor- ried about the roots. They could be growing under my house.” She said she would like to see

the trees removed. A Kent County Council spokesperson said: “A Kent Highways officer has inspected trees in Birling Road, and work has been scheduled to cut back tree branches that are shading the street lights.” Joan said that since talking to

Town Talk the council had cleared the branches around a streetlight and sawn off a couple of branches overhanging their wall.

Young bakers prove their skills

ABOUT 30 parents and children crowded into Beaneys Medway Bakery in Snodland High Street to be taught how to make a loaf – and enjoy a party! Chris Beaney explained that every year there is a na- tional Craft Baker week and he decided to have an open day in his recently re-furbished bakery. “I spoke about bread and what goes into a loaf,” he

said. “They all made a small loaf and while the bread was being proved and baked, we went into the tea room and ate cup cakes, gingerbread biscuits and other goodies.” They took home their loaves, as well as cakes and biscuits which had not been eaten. Chris said he had received many “thank you” cards

and people had called in the shop to say thank you. He is trying to put together some ideas for birthday parties at the shop. “It was a great opportunity to show people what we do and give them a chance to have a go themselves,” he added.
