RailCONNECT edition of RailCONNECT, a quarterly publication available online at
www.railconnect.co.uk and in print format. We hope all of our readers are finding this publication a useful industry communication tool, to bridge the gap between buyers and suppliers in the rail industry.
In this edition, we have our regular features by Christian Wolmar; a writer and broadcaster specialising in transport. He has covered the railways since privatisation in the mid 1990s and writes regularly for national newspapers and magazines. In this quarter, Christian takes a tour of the huge project currently in motion to revamp the most unloved station in the country, Birmingham New Street, to see what is being done to greatly increase the comfort of passengers, on pages 4-5. Christian also looks at the row between Virgin, First Group and the DfT over the right to run the lucrative West Coast line, on pages 24-25, which has thrown the franchise process into chaos and could change the rail industry for the foreseeable future. Christian investigates how Dutch company Abellio is trying to bring its homeland values and priorities to Britain’s railways, on pages 28-29, and we get a HS2 update on pages 26-27 highlighting that, despite rumours of its demise, HS2 is all on track, as they now employ 1,000 people and are spending £300million this year.
We also have our regular articles covering Training, Law, Finance, Recruitment, Environment, and Security to keep you abreast of issues within the industry. Flick to pages 30-32 to read this edition’s Q&A’s, which in this edition are answered by Head of Disability and Inclusion at ATOC, David Sindall, in response to an article in our last edition covering the difficulties disabled people are encountering whilst travelling on the railways.

In addition to our regular features, Paul Dawson, Managing Partner and Sales Director at Dawson Precision Components, got in touch with RailCONNECT to tell us what rail manufacturers look for in a supplier and some of the processes involved on pages 44-45. RailCONNECT also speaks to Jo North, The Big Bang Partnership’s innovation guru and accomplished senior transport executive, who discusses what the key factors are for leading innovation in the rail industry in a way that contributes to profitable customer growth, on pages 46-47. And finally, Movement Strategies explain what was involved in developing the event day transport plan for a number of major stations important to the 2012 Games, on pages 50-51.
Do make use of our convenient and up to date directory covering a range of companies and breadth of products and services available to the rail industry starting from page 55. If your company isn’t currently listed, please refer to our inclusion form on page 79 or alternatively e-mail
andrew.tepielow@theconnectseries.co.uk.
RailCONNECT is about your industry so we welcome your editorial contributions. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch should you have any comments or suggestions as we are always interested to hear your views.
We hope our readers enjoy this edition of RailCONNECT and look forward to hearing any feedback you may have.
