Crossrail electric trains that will be quicker, cleaner, quieter and smoother compared to the existing diesel suburban trains.

Network Rail said that it has already installed the temporary footbridge next to Middlegreen Bridge in order to maintain pedestrian and cycle access over the railway while the current bridge is destroyed and rebuilt.

Network Rail programme director of Crossrail Jorge Mendonça said that Crossrail will transform the journeys of passengers who wish to travel into or across central London.

“The work we are undertaking on bridges across the western section of the route will not only enable new longer Crossrail trains to operate but is also an essential part of the programme to electrify the Great Western main line,” Mendonça said.

Design, development and delivery of the Crossrail project on the existing network is being carried out by Network Rail, which is responsible for upgrading 43 miles of track and improving 27 stations and 20 bridges.

Upon completion in 2018, the Crossrail service will increase London’s rail-based capacity by 10%, delivering faster journey times and an estimated 24 trains an hour between Paddington and Whitechapel during peak times.

The Crossrail route will pass through 37 stations and run 118km from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west, through new twin-bore 21km tunnels to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.
