Network Rail has received approval from the UK Department for Transport (UK DfT) to build a £45m railway flyover at Shaftholme, north of Doncaster in the UK.

Construction on the new flyover, the North Doncaster Chord, will be carried out by an alliance between Network Rail and Morgan Sindall.

The North Doncaster Chord project involves the construction of a 3.2km twin-track railway line, partly on embankment and partly on a new 246m viaduct.

Scheduled to be completed in early 2014, the North Doncaster Chord will take slow moving

freight trains travelling from the Humber ports up and over the East Coast Main Line (ECML) rather than across and along it.

The new flyover will help to divert freight traffic for passenger services and allow additional rail freight transport through rail.

The project is part of Network Rail’s £600m programme to improve capacity and reliability on the East Coast Main Line (ECML), which also includes construction of new sections of track, platforms and stations to help deliver faster, more frequent services.

Network Rail Route Managing Director, Phil Verster, said that the UK relies upon rail and with the increasing demand for rail travel, the company has to invest in the railway to offer better services for passengers with more trains, additional seats and improved punctuality.

and reliability on the busy East Coast Main Line,” Verster said.

The scheme is part of Network Rail’s aim to increase the number of freight containers coming into the country’s ports to be transported by rail.

According to Network Rail, transporting freight by rail reduces CO2 emissions by 74%, helping the UK to improve its carbon footprint.

The North Doncaster Chord project underwent a one-year consultation before being submitted to the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) on 22 June 2011.
